@mangeurdenuage 1. Designed by intellectuals throwing out tradition and ideals of beauty, likely not to last evdn a hundred years, 1975.2. Designed and built by skilled tradesmen with traditions going back hundreds of years, then maintained for hundreds of years, 1500.

@Xeraser @EdBoatConnoisseur @mangeurdenuage there is a space for experimentation for sure, but speding materials time and money to create such monstruosity is a fucking sin, this shit should've stayed as a scaled down model instead of a real building

@nachtrabe @rlier23 @EdBoatConnoisseur @Xeraser @mangeurdenuage You know, when I look at modern buildings, the most troubling thing, is they are not built to last. That stone building will last, until a bulldozer comes and knocks it down. Will cities start to fall apart because, corners are cut more and more? Will they look similar in 50 years? I doubt it!

@hazlin @rlier23 @EdBoatConnoisseur @Xeraser @mangeurdenuage I don't even buy the cost argument in many cases.Sure, there are commie blocks, be they built by actual communists nor not, that *might* look this depressing because of their utilitarian nature. But there are also countless examples of representational buildings that also all look like a fortress for the bad guys from robocop. There is no way these giant glass facades are cost effective in anything: construction, maintainence, cleaning, heating.

@hazlin @nachtrabe @rlier23 @EdBoatConnoisseur @Xeraser @mangeurdenuage Anything that uses reinforced concrete in tension has a finite lifespan. The rebar will rust and eventually will fall. Only questions are how long until then and is it a controlled demolition.Well-designed unreinforced structures in compression will outlast them by far.

@teknomunk @hazlin @nachtrabe @rlier23 @Xeraser @mangeurdenuage nothing with rebar will ever reach even a fraction of the lifespan of the colosseum or the pantheon.

@EdBoatConnoisseur @nachtrabe @rlier23 @teknomunk @Xeraser @mangeurdenuage This was the exact thing I was thinking about. A post apocalyptic modern city... is a green field xD And, even then the Colosseum and Parthenon will be standing

@EdBoatConnoisseur @nachtrabe @rlier23 @Xeraser @mangeurdenuage @hazlin Yes. As rebar rusts, and if you have rebar in contact with concrete, it will rust, it expands causing stresses that will break the concrete.Concrete without rebar will not have this problem, but it requires more labor intensive construction techniques for the required arches, which means it is more expensive.

@hazlin @nachtrabe @rlier23 @teknomunk @Xeraser @mangeurdenuage I meant the pantheon built by hadrian, agrippa’s pantheon, not the parthenon, the parthenon was made from marble, hadrian made the pantheon from concrete with marble pillars on the outside and colorful floor and walls of marble from all over the mediterranean on the inside.

@hazlin @nachtrabe @rlier23 @teknomunk @Xeraser @mangeurdenuage The massive dome of the pantheon is pure concrete, supported by walls of brick and concrete, unlike most moder dome buildings the inside of the pantheon can perfectly contain a sphere of the same radius as it’s dome.

@EdBoatConnoisseur @nachtrabe @rlier23 @Xeraser @mangeurdenuage @hazlinIt is a beautiful building, and one that will last provided it recieves a minimum of maintenancr and doesn't get hit by a bomb or bulldozed.Arched buildings are very beautiful and I wish there were more being built. The curves are visually pleasing and with a good foundation are structurally sound for hundreds or thousands of years. But...Their construction can't be accelerated much by mechanization. You need lots of skilled laborers familiar with brick or stone. They take longer to construct, so labor costs are higher. Material costs are also higher. And that doesn't work for a people with the desire to build it as fast and cheaply as possible, saddle someone with a loan for a building that is barely not falling apart the minute it is finished and run off with the loot before they wise up.

@hazlin @nachtrabe @rlier23 @teknomunk @Xeraser @mangeurdenuage For hadrian considered the pantheon his magnum opus, the most sublime the temple to all the gods, a perfect combination of the elegance of the marble temples of old with the most new that ccould only be built after the romans mastered the art and science of creating their own liquid stone, the entrance to the pantheon was closed by 2 massive bronze doors, and at noon on the 21th of april the date of the foundation of rome hadrian would pass through the gates of the pantheon engulfed by the light of sol stablishing the divine existance of the roman emperor.

@teknomunk @nachtrabe @rlier23 @Xeraser @mangeurdenuage @hazlin oh yes, the pantheon required massive amounts of skilled labour, all the bricks are consistent, every carving and every chisel strike was perfect, the lines of the casted concrete are sharp and clean, every part is reinforced, every load was accounted for, balanced and distributed, even the dome itself was casted in phases using lighter agregate the closer to the top it gets to the point that the last third of the dome used pumice as aggregate to make it as light as possible without compromising the durability or strenght.
