Concept : Establishing a lightweight network running on low bandwidth. This would make corporate spying difficult because most corps hire retarded pajeets who make bloated software.Imagine them trying to set up surveillance on your shit when their tool is several mbs on a network that clocks max speeds in the bs.It would also force participants to write light-weight and elegant code.

@parker Realistically speaking, how feasible/secure would this be?I'd be willing to crunch some numbers to see a potential budget breakdown

I’ve got a few LoRa modules, the meshtastic libraries are already available, and they have been doing some work on adding encryption

@parker @Leaflord @graf @harblinger Need to setup HAM to connect the Leaf to the Gulf. Will be interesting to compare notes during the new depression.

Out here there's lots of town library boxes you could add modules too. Even better, in the countryside there's unmonitored pipeline access points all over the place with solar panels & yagi antennas already setup. Finally, most places in Canada already have LoRa coverage through the helium network, which you could bootstrap off of.

But anyways, super feasible. LoRa has a 15 km range for line-of-sight communications, and uses hardly any power.

That would be great, ham relays to connect more isolated lora networks, meshtastic has a section on that too.

@Leaflord @parker @graf @harblinger Andreas Spiess does a good breakdown of parts, you’d need to enumerate and then figure maintenance costs though.

Is this a network that could be easily tapped into by outsiders or would it be able to fly under the radar purely by being literally who?And of course would there be any legal moments considering the fact that Industry Canada oversees things like communication infrastructure. ie: the existence of an unregulated communications network

By tapping into, I mean would it be easily discoverable.

I know they've done >800 km using weather balloons, but I'm thinking the smaller meshtastic modules, rather than a home station or whatnot.

Well anyone with a radio looking at LoRa bands would see activity, but it's free airspace (not requiring a license) and you could encrypt everything. I know amateur radio you're not allowed to encrypt, so maybe you could relay over longer distances via web/i2p instead.

@parker @Leaflord @graf I think encryption over ham radio is one of those rules that doesn't get enforced, like going 10 over the speed limit https://www.amateurradio.com/encryption-is-already-legal-its-the-intention-thats-not/I wouldn't worry about itIs there anything out there for the project yet? I'm very serious about it "being the dream" -- all I have is some lost notes from pre-LORA esp8266 ideas, but can contribute a piece of whatever needs to get done (have a little experience w/everything)

I guess it depends on the battery, but the tiny meshtastic modules can go 2 days I think, probably 2 weeks with a better lipo battery, enough to be supplemented indefinitely by a solar panel.

Still, if we're talking about a national-scale communications network, I wouldn't want to bring down shit on the amateur radio community.

@parker @Leaflord @graf @harblinger where I am a relay would be necessary between myself and the nearest town. Its a neat idea if you could get it to power itself with a solar panel.

I2P service then might be nice, easier to start with than a bunch of amateur radios.
