I was speaking to a friend the other day, and I gave him some book recommendations. His response was "yeah, but you're a bookworm..."I really don't class myself as a bookworm, far from it actually. I read like 10-15 books in a year.Bookworms, to me, are those folk who have multiple books on the go at the same time. Those who forego all things in favour of a book. Can quote books off the cuff. I'm not any of those things. What's your idea of a bookworm?

@kev Only 38% of Poles read a single book in the last 12 months. This is sad.My idea of a bookworm is someone who always has at least one book going and not because they have to, but because they want to.

@kev impostor syndrome plus stereotypical assumptions kicking in...Ok maybe not :blobcatderpy: I've read 7 books (and perhaps like 12 or so manga series) this year...I could have read those 7 books in a couple weeks if I really were a bookworm, and manga doesn't have as much text anyhow.I wish I could find more people who read at least as much as I do, but I am introverted too so :blobcatdunno:

@kev a lot of the posts I see from you are book-related. I guess your level of enthusiasm for and enjoyment from reading also count towards being a bookworm.I'd be interested to know how your friend sees your recommendations differently because he perceives you as a bookworm. He's probably expecting Dostoevsky as a recommendation. I'd suggest recommending Mr Tickles from the Mr Men series and see what reaction you get 🙂

@kev I guess I'm a serial bookworm, I can't read more than one book at a time, I've read ~30 books so far this year, I'd classify someone that sees reading as one of their main sources of entertaiment.

@kev I consider anyone a bookworm if they gain most of their knowledge/entertainment from reading. Be it manpages, fictional/non-fictional books & stories, encyclopedias, etc.

@kev Not sure quantity really matters. You could be a slow reader and only knock out a book a month, but if it's consistent and you are always chipping away a book, you are a bookworm.I read 15-60 minutes every night before bed.

@kev to me, in context of this story, the answer to your question is simple and obvious. if he asked for book suggestions, you provided them and he called you a bookworm, he's a jerk and deserved a rude reply (a friend can take it without getting hurt). if he did not ask for suggestions and it was your initiative to give recommendations, well, he's justified to call you a bookworm 😂

@Charadon oooo interesting perspective. I read a TONNE of blogs, journals, research etc. but I don’t class that as reading, weirdly. I should do, and it most definitely is reading, but the term “bookworm” for me, is about reading book - long form novels etc.

@kev I read roughly the same amount as you, and I don’t consider myself a bookworm. There are people who read A LOT more books who I would consider bookworms, but I don’t have an arbitrary number. I guess it’s a matter of one’s identity.

@kev Yea, that is an interesting point of view. I don't "read" much, as in read books, but I "read" almost all day from the time I get up to when I go to sleep. Maybe a few hours off total. That MIGHT be why I'm so bad at finishing books these days. @Charadon

@mike @kev @rapidscampi I also read Crime & Punishment. It was about an edgelord who thought he was an ubermensch and could get away with murder until he tried it.There was no need for the authorities to punish Raskolnikov; he managed that just fine on his own.

@kev The definition of a bookworm is ”an avid book reader". Anything more is just what we add to it socially as in a social label or generalization of a type of person.

@mike @kev @rapidscampi I was mind blown because I was in a bubble. I was/am bias because of the education system I grew up with. Basically whatever the ministry of education felt appropriate was what we were taught. I can easily imagine that another country can have different focus when it gets to foreign literature. Also regarding the list, I don't know many as well 🤓😅

@kev ... well. I bought a set of 13 books a few weeks ago, despite already having no room to put them in due to the number of other books I've bought this year.I don't often read multiple books at a time, though there's been a few times where I've put down something (emotionally) heavy in favor of something light, finished the lighter book in a few hours, and gone back to the heavier one. There's been a few years where I only read a few books, but a few where I read over a hundred :P
