@teamochi @angryandignored It’s the same at home, a nightmare, the only people whocan do anything are those who can afford these Kedergreenhouses. What pisses me off is that they then havea tendency to say oh why are the rest of you not doing this, and it’s like, ok, are you going to pay for it for us to start it.So windy, plus the salt air, so without that kind of shelter youare on a hiding to nothing, especially on the west sides of theislands.

@HebrideanHecate @angryandignored Yeah...it's like this couple somewhere around Toronto with this gorgeous dome - but they ackonwledge that it is an investment to do to garden like this, and not everyone can do that. We are facing a similar predicament here in Finland, even for balcony gardening we need a greenhouse and if we buy some land, we can't grow much (or for long) without a greenhouse or a dome. 🙄 It's just too cold! So...richer people can have a variety of veggies and the poor ones can grow just potatoes, beets and carrots. Oh well. :blobcheeky:

@teamochi @angryandignored Oh yes, we can grow excellent potatoes 😂 and barley.I’d love a Keder, but they are too expensive, but it’s the onlytype which stand up to the winds…or supposedly anyway. When you see them on a plot you can be pretty sure it isn’ta local who has them, not very often anyway.I also think that because of the climate and lack of time now, when so many people are in different employment rather thanworking the land, or having to do 2 or 3 different jobs, therejust isn’t the time, and also habit, we grew what we knew wecould without a struggle. We had a good wee garden when Iwas a child, my mother was green fingered, but we also livedon the east side, and it has a bit more shelter from the fullblast of the Atlantic onslaught. I always wanted a beautifulgarden. We also suffer from a lot of deer predation, and thegeese are also doing a colossal amount of crop damage too, also to the grazing grass etc.

@HebrideanHecate @angryandignored Here in Finland we don't have so much wind (unless you live by the coast, then the autumn and winter can be very windy) but we have SO. MUCH. SNOW!!! Here in Northern Karelia especially...like, the road maintenance services clean the roads from some of the snow, and by mid-winter the piles on the side can be 2-3 meters high 😅 So, any greenhouse/dome/etc. needs to be VERY sturdy, to handle the weight of the snow. People usually have these 5000€++ glass greenhouses that are heavy as hell and can survive the apocalypse, because the winter is somewhat apocalyptic too. Oh, and you might maybe also like this blog: https://by-my-solitary-hearth.net/ of a well writing pagan gardener lady :blobcatlove:

@teamochi @HebrideanHecate @angryandignored NI gets moderate winds so long as there not in the coast, but we have drastic cloud cover and lots of rain. It means that you need covered space for young, fragile plants in the early part of the growing season or they get wrecked or fail to thrive. Grow lights seem to do the job, but you still need the initial lay out for equipment and of course space. The cupboard we had for growing nursery plants and microgreens is currently full of winter coats after their previous storage space succumbed to damp.
