Seems like the #Apple #vulnerability went on the headlines in many places, and I'm not happy with the coverage for non-techies. Like, dunk on the #tech industry all you want, but by simply discovering, publicizing, and patching a vulnerability, Apple is not to blame... Switching phones will unlikely protect you from future, undiscovered vulnerabilities... And so #news organizations should, on top of reminding people to update (fortunately they do), explain these big words in layman's terms.

@austin All they needed to say was to update your devices ASAP to avoid security issues. This is nothing new, software security updates have been around for ages now. Instead they created a panic.

@freakazoid I suppose you mean https://www.nytimes.com/2022/08/21/technology/google-surveillance-toddler-photo.html , for which it is also one of those things where switching providers is unlikely to fix, since CSAM has been made such a big - not just legal, but also moral - liability, that companies would not dare to compromise and activists would find a difficult time to argue about. Two takeaways: beware of backups (fair game to scan them), and there should be secure communication between healthcare providers and patients.

@austin Apple abandoned their plan to actively scan for CSAM, so I think for the moment switching providers actually *does* make a difference. It also makes a difference in terms of likelihood of getting caught up in a dragnet, because Google has been acting as a "one stop shop" for American law enforcement dragnets, while Apple tend to push back or not have the data at all.
