Well shit. I just realised I forgot to call the vet yesterday (they never called me back on Thursday) and now they're closed for the weekend. Is there anyone on fedi who can write a prescription for something like Itraconazole or Terbinafine that I can have filled by Chewy (assuming that's legal)? He weighs between 4 and 4.1 pounds depending on the last time he ate/went to the bathroom. If not, then I guess I can just wait until Monday and hope they don't want me to bring him in.#CornbreadTheCatPXL_20220817_170406615.jpg

I work in a vets office. If you could find another vet in the state that could get you in over the weekend that would be most ideal. What issue is he having that you need to get the medication for?

@RyokoUmbra that's the thing. I don't want to go in. It's a hassle and I don't have a car plus I don't want to spend the money. It's ringworm. I have ringworm and a few days ago my cat was scratching at his neck and the places he's scratching glow under a Wood's light. It doesn't take a vet visit to diagnose. I'd rather save the hassle and money and just put that money towards the medication, ya know?

@RyokoUmbra Basically, I've been dealing with ringworm for over 2 weeks now. Been trying to keep Cornbread uninfected and checking him under a Wood's light every few days.I went to the doctor last Wednesday and she prescribed me an oral regimen of Lamisil for 14 days.I was already on my way to work when the prescription was ready so I had to wait until Thursday.Thursday morning I noticed Cornbread scratching at his neck so I ran my black light over him and there's a patch on the right side of his neck, right against his shoulder that's glowing. He contacted ringworm from me despite my best efforts. Since I'm getting oral medication to clear it up I figure it's best to get him some (now) so that we both can clear it up and aren't spreading it back and forth. I called the vet Thursday and explained the situation but all the doctors were out for lunch and the lady told me she'd relay the info to them when they came in and call me back to see what they wanted to do.She never called me back and I meant to call again yesterday but forgot and was also tied up with getting a haircut before work.I'd like to get the oral medication in as fast as possible (my prescription is only for 2 weeks) but unless I can get someone on here to send in a prescription I won't be able to get one until Monday and then add 3 day shipping on top of that.I doubt any vets open today who haven't seen Cornbread before would be willing to send in a prescription without an initial visit.I guess it's at least worth a shot tho. I can call around the whole state and maybe one of them will be willing to help me out.

@sjw You can get miconazole over the counter, no prescription. You should also consider a bath for Cornbread with a cat-safe antifungal shampoo. The vet might be able to direct you through all this without coming in, although a good vet will at least try to talk you into a visit so they can assess how bad it is. They may also offer help with the antifungal bath and some training on the best way to apply the antifungal treatment safely and effectively. This may be one of those times when it's worth seeing the vet now to avoid multiple visits down the line. Proper treatment early can prevent it from getting worse and taking a lot longer to clear up. If it's not effective, this can linger for over a year if you live somewhere humid. This really sucks for both of you. I'm sorry. :(

So, luckily ringworm is something that you can get OTC medication for it. If Cornbread is ok with getting a back I can find some products you might could pick up at a local pet supply shop if you have one close by.

If you have a PetSmart near by this might be a good option that should be able to get in store. https://www.petsmart.com/dog/grooming-supplies/shampoos-and-conditioners/zymox-advanced-enzymatic-pet-shampoo-5323080.htmlThere is also the option of finding an iodine or sulfur based shampoo that would help with ringworm.

Either it's oral medical or twice daily bleach baths. The choice is theirs.

@sjw Your nearest Walgreens will have it, or Amazon. It's the same topical treatment that's used for jock itch, yeast infections, and a few other things. Ideally you want a spray.I just checked Chewy and they also have sprays with non-prescription strength. chewy.com/davis-miconazole-dog-cat-spray/dp/162102

@sjw Chewy and Amazon also have some appropriate shampoos. You should at least try to get a phone consultation though. If the vet won't do it, any animal shelter will have experience with ringworm and may talk you through options for free.

@sugaring I know my options. Please actually listen to me. I might have brain damage but I’m not retarded. Read everything I’ve said in this conversation. WHAT I’M ASKING FOR IS A PRESCRIPTION FOR ORAL MEDICATION!Seriously, why is this so hard to understand? If you can’t tell me how the cat contracted ringworm you’re a very poor listener and it makes me question if I should believe anything you say because how’d you even learn it in the first place if you refuse to read/listen? Sounds like extremely sketchy advice pulled out of the ass if you ask me.

Ah, sorry. It's zymox lp3 enzyme shampoo. It should be an OTC shampoo. I don't know if you have anything similar to a Tractor Supply but I've seen it in places similar to that before. You might even be able to buy it from somewhere like Chewy and possibly get it by Monday or Tuesday.

Unfortunately, the form of the medication is due to the companies that manufacture them. It also depends on the medication. If that medication isn't available or safe for cats in a different form, an oral medication may not be an option. I have several cats of my own and help with treatments for cats at our clinic all the time. If it can be hidden in their food, it's the best option. It's not only less stressful or traumatizing for the pet but safer for the humans involved as well.

@roboneko @sjw @RyokoUmbra Because it's cheaper and/or because it's the only way the drug is made. Not all drugs have an oral liquid option. They have pill guns you can use, but if you're going to dry pill, absolutely force water down after to avoid damage to the throat. Recommend 6ml water after. I've also crushed up pills in 3ml of water and washed it down with 3 more mls. I wouldn't suggest that though for life saving medicine because it's likely to lose efficacy with this method. You're bound to lose some medication and your fucking up all the slow release time

@sjw @RyokoUmbra IDK what meds your doc has your cats on. But here we use itraconazole as the oral antifungal (although terbinafine was on the menu before), a topical antifungal like miconazole daily, and a lime dip; if you're doing a bath, then 2x a week with 3 days in-between treatments. if you're only doing spot treatments then we do those daily. Our regime may be a bit over-kill, but we also have a lot of mammals we need to make sure it doesn't spread toIssue with our oral antifungal is it is at least a 5 week long program. you use the meds for one week, then rest one week, use again for one week etc. It is long and laborious. However the good news is ringworm is not dangerous. Annoying, yes, but it doesn't impact your immune system, it is just a fungus living on your hair and the very outer layer of your dead skin. Without treatment it is actually self limiting, however that would take 6 months minimum to reach that point.
