Vivaldi 5.4 came out last week, and somehow I didn't notice until today. I really like the "Copy Link to Highlight" feature. It's not unique to Vivaldi, but I wasn't aware it was a feature at all. I'm guessing I'll be using that in the future. https://vivaldi.com/new/

@mike Vivaldi 5.4 s*cks worse than an old Russian vacuum cleaner. They moved the Reload button to the far left of the V menu.

@xpil Hm, I hadn't noticed since I usually just do the pull down to refresh rather than use the menu, but you're right. That's not optimal. I think they confused their Desktop UX with their mobile. I would argue the layout makes sense for a desktop browser. Mobile it kinda sucks. Hopefully they'll revise that decision, or at the very least make it configurable.

@mike I noticed that last night as well. Very awesome feature I will absolutely use in the future. I can't tell you how many times I've sent someone a link and said "scroll down to the section that starts with..."

@mike Vivaldi is based on Chromium. I think Chromium has it built in.

@EpicCyndaquil Yea, I showed it to my wife who doesn't even use Vivaldi and she thought it could be really useful. She teaches college courses as a side gig, and thought it would be really useful for notes and teaching materials.

@Fil3 Yea, the release blog says that the links will work for "anyone using a Chromium-based browser", which unfortunately is pretty much everybody. Vivaldi probably supported it before in that it could probably use them. I think this is just where it added a super easy context menu for creating the links.

@mike @EpicCyndaquil@fosstodon.orgKeep in mind these style of links, while working in all Chromium based browsers, will not nessecarily work elsewhere.

@mike @Fil3 Are context menus are also fully customisable if you don't want it or want it in a different position, e.g. higher or lower in the menu.

@ruari Yea, I'm aware, but in cases it doesn't work it still works like just a plain link. I haven't done a comprehensive test of all browsers of course, but in Firefox it just takes me to the page and ignores the highlight part. I suppose there might be a browser out there it causes problems for, but I'd guess that browser is a minor part of the market.@EpicCyndaquil

@mike @ruari they specifically said it works in Chromium browsers - Firefox is separate from that, right?

@EpicCyndaquil Yes, and it still kinda works. Just the highlight and the bit where it takes you directly to the highlighted section doesn't work in Firefox. It still takes you to the linked page. It doesn't just fail outright. I have no idea how it works in Safari. Maybe someone with a Mac or an iPhone can test this link for me and tell me what it does?https://hub.fosstodon.org/support/#:~:text=with%20a%20quick-,thank%20you,-.%20The%20support%20that@ruari

@mike Here is the Mozilla position about this feature (not actually a Standard) : https://github.com/mozilla/standards-positions/issues/194There is an extension for Firefox to support this link-to-text-fragment links :https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/link-to-text-fragment/@EpicCyndaquil @ruari

@ruari Honestly, that's not terribly surprising. It makes things bad for iPhone users as Apple has that thing with their browser engines.@EpicCyndaquil
