First step to turn our small city garden into a bio diverse paradise. We removed most of the tiles, leaving only a small terrace and replaced the sand with soil. Next planting.#biodiversity #garden

@ericbuijs apparently, one of the best things that you can do for biodiversity in your garden is have a pond.I sunk a 50l plastic tub in our garden. It didn't take too long to have plenty of bugs in there.

@ericbuijs very nice. My wife and I had a local landscaper come last year and plant only native plants in out flower garden. This year has been wonderful with the explosion of plant and flower growth and honeybees and butterflies coming to visit.

This how our garden looks now. After removing all the tiles we started looking for indigenous plants. The first tree, a Medlar, has been planted too. I've learned that the coming months are excellent for planting trees. #biodiversity #garden

@ericbuijs that's great progress! I'm also looking forward to planting a tree come november, although I don't think it will be indigenous/autochtonous.

@michiel That's nice. I'm already noticing lots of insects and birds feeding on the ground. Exactly what we wanted for this project.

@ericbuijs it looks like you have hedges on both sides, but if you haven't yet, birds absolutely love them for nesting.

@michiel That's right, the hedges have been able to grow for twenty years now and have all sorts of life in it like birds, mouse and even a hedgehog now and then.

I installed a Water Butt today as part of our #garden project. It's made out of recycled plastic and can contain 200L. Now we can collect rain water, which there is plenty of here, and use it for the garden.

August update on our small bio diverse garden. Still lots of flowers in bloom. The leaves of the medlar tree have already turned brown (is this normal?). We had plenty of great tasting figs from the fig tree on the left.#biodiversity #garden

September update on our small bio diverse garden. The beginning of the autumn. Already less flowers and less insects visible. I have to find a better place for the insect hotel (not visible on image). I'm beginning to think that the medlar is dead.#biodiversity #garden

@ericbuijs If you have enough hiding places in your garden you don't need an insect hotel. Nevertheless, if you hang one, hang it in a sunny wind free place. The medlar could just be suffering from heat stress. Don't give up on it yet.

@desikn Thanks for the advice. I'll try to find such a place for the insect hotel. We also have some pottery placed upside down together with piles of small stones. Hopefully the insects like that too.Yes, the leaves of the medlar turned brown in two weeks during this dry summer. So I agree that it could be heat stress. We will see if it survives the winter.

November update on our small bio diverse garden experiment. I did some trimming of the garden especially the hedera which has the tendency to fester. I also had to store the solar panels in the garden that will go onto the roof tomorrow.#biodiversity #garden
