@iowahawkblog: "Elvis died 45 years ago today. Better to remember '56-'57 Elvis than '76-'77.>@TexasChance: 'This is my favorite pic of Elvis. Partially cuz he looks cool. Mostly because my grandma took it. September of 1957. He stopped for breakfast in Cleveland, TX after a show in Houston. Props to my mom @Beckyha72662639 for preserving it. #Elvis45 [image]'"https://nitter.poast.org/iowahawkblog/status/1560049249475350529

I was swimming at a large outdoor pool called Maywood Beach in Olive Branch, MS and our babysitter who was listening to the radio told us.

I learned much later that one of my older relatives who had lived near the Presleys in Tupelo babysat for them. She lived to be over 100.

One of the curious aspects of having lived all my life in Memphis, I never actually visited Graceland until Mama Harb came out as a big fan in her later years. It's like one of the touristy things you might never go see unless you were entertaining guests from out of town.

One of the more memorable things to me was the handball court out back, which has a very high ceiling, and the walls all the way up are covered with gold and platinum record awards, now that the house is a museum. I also remember the game room downstairs, which is covered walls and ceiling with pleated fabric that gathers together above the light fixture hanging over the pool table.

@darulharb my ex loved Elvis. We took the girls there on vacation. They were about 9-10 & didn’t much care about Elvis, it was height of Michael Jackson popularity, so they wore their MJ shirts 😊. Don’t know where they get that silent protest from?

Seems like you'd have to be vacuuming that all the time, I thought. The whole house is rather modest as mansions go, and certainly by the standards of modern celebrities. But it's vastly larger than the little shotgun shack Elvis grew up in down in Tupelo. A "shotgun" house, for those who don't know, is a house that has doors that are directly opposite each other on either end, such that you could fire a shotgun right through the opened doors and not hit anything.

@darulharb And where to get to the back of the house from the front, you have to go through the middle room. No hallways at all.

From what I recall, it's quite a bit smaller and narrower than a single wide trailer. And yes, you could see directly through from the front door to the back door. And one more thing... here's the evidence of one of the Elvis legends about Graceland. The TV that Elvis shot, as photographed by Annie Leibovitz, on a storeroom shelf at Graceland (it's not on public display, at least when I visited, years ago):

@Stacie One bit of trivia, Elvis' hair was actually blond. There's an early picture of this, from before he developed his stage persona.

@BlkLdyPatriot Hmm. I've got the album, which I really liked when it came out. The title track is obviously metaphorical, and seems to come from the same place as "Hearts and Bones," but a little further on from his breakup with Carrie Fisher. Resigned to moving on, in search of something else.

It occurs to me that the fabric might have served as a bit of sound insulation, so that Elvis and the boys shooting pool downstairs didn't disturb the rest of the house. At least I like to think that's what it's about.

@darulharb I’ve been to Graceland, it’s kind of eerie. I should visit his house in Tupelo, we live close and go there a lot (stationed at Columbus AFB).

@Marg >I’ve been to Graceland, it’s kind of eerie.A bit, if only in the sense some rooms are like a time capsule, stuck forever in the 1970s. The front room, especially, I thought, with several tube TVs so he could watch multiple channels at once. Also the business office out in the stables.

Otherwise, it's another example of Elvis' unusual taste in interior design, like the "Jungle" Room.

@darulharb My understanding about ‘shotgun’ houses is that they were constructed this way to enhance air flow through the structure. They were often built on piers, too. All to help keep things cooler in the hot, humid climate.

@EarlThePearls —I definitely remember when that album was released. Received a great deal of accolades and airplay.Looking back, it was well-deserved. Some of Paul’s best solo work since the early 1970s.I’m a fan. My Dad had a few Simon & Garfunkel 45s. @darulharb

@darulharb I remember being out in front yard, riding my Big Wheel, when Mom came out to tell us kids that Elvis had died.
