Is "persistent defense" - fighting to the last soldier like in Mariupol - effective? Does it cause more loss to the enemy than to the defender?

@wolf480pl It depends. The declared purpose of Mariupol defense was to engage Russian forces in the south, which kind of worked, becase as soon as they captured Mariupol, they moved these forces to Donbass. But not earlier. And Ukraine was struggling with shortage long-range artillery at that time, which made situation in Donbass very difficult for them.

@kravietz yeah I know it can be of strategic utility. I'm asking whether it makes sense in isolation, in terms id pure manpower. How many dead russian soldiers per dead ukrainian soldier.

@kravietz oh I can just look that up on wikipedia. Looks like 1.5x more casualties on Russia's side. While being outnumvered 4:1. Not bad, as long as enemt doesn't have infinite manpower.

@wolf480pl historically it is very expensive to root out a dug-in and determined defender. In practice it's often a matter of whether the defenders have a choice. Even though the cost to the attacker is usually greater, the cost to the defenders may still be greater than they are willing to pay if they have other viable options.

@RandomDamage I was wondering whether we should be teaching our soldiers "don't try to be brave, evac if you can't win", in case they do have the option and choose to defend anyway.

@wolf480pl unless there are specific orders it's always the call of the highest ranking person in a unit (usually an officer, but not necessarily) doctrine varies depending on the situationIf there are specific orders, you stick to the orders.
