When you need a fake domain name to do some testing (or to fill in a required field that you know will be inapplicable), what do you usually use?

@proactiveservices Hmm, I should have included .example and .invalid in the poll along with .test. The intention was "I use a reserved TLD".I wonder if I should edit and reissue this poll.

@proactiveservices @urusan I sometimes go with example.org or example.net, but otherwise same; I'm surprised this wasn't on the list.

@wizzwizz4 @proactiveservices Also, it's good to know that example.com, example.org, example.net, and example.edu are second level test domains.https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Example.com

For this poll, the third choice includes any reserved domain name, not just those in the .test domain. This includes:.test.invalid.exampleexample.comexample.orgexample.netexample.edu

@urusan Well, I've messed up your poll, then. Sorry. (I selected Other.)

@wizzwizz4 I should have researched this more carefully. :-PI think the discussion is more valuable than the poll.

@urusan I use a reserved example domain. Boring, but it will never bite you. "Made up" domain names for testing/example purposes can make it to production and cause headaches for the people who actually own them. I know the guy who owns acme.com.https://www.iana.org/domains/reserved

@urusan@fosstodon.org I don't know that I've come across situations where I would need a domain that won't ever be used :akko_mmh:But I own demodoma.in for demos and tests and stuff so I would probably just use that.

@urusan I've always used example.(com|net|org) and/or domain names that I control for testing. I've never hard coded any domains or IP addresses -- my stuff always uses configuration files so that simple problems don't require code updates.

@urusan @wizzwizz4 @proactiveservices example.com is a member of the placeholder pantheon, with "foobar" and "lorem ipsum". I wonder what else is there?
