1,000 notifications (in a 24 hour period) is actually a rite of passage. Its hard to get even if you subbed to a bunch of people. When I had gotten over 1,000 subs on another instance I shall not name I wasn't subbed to anybody iirc so fuck you.

@Terry if you mean fedi, not terribly difficult. Just get into a hellthread or multiple hellthreads and you can achieve it. I’m pretty sure this account hit that with the over 2k post hellthread back at the beginning of the summer.

@NEETzsche @Terry @e @marine not a lot honestly unless you use some automatic/real graph stuff under the hood. At my current job everything is in Graphql and we basically write our own translation between the models (postgres backend) and the graph queries and it's super annoying as fuck.

@NEETzsche @e @Terry @marine no the point of graphql is to provide a central frontend for an API even if its made up of microservices. it's in the family of RPC interfaces.i looked in to it for a time. but then i found https://github.com/deeprjs/deepr which is basically the same without needing yet another parser. and JMAP does similar shit https://jmap.io/basically you extend the verb object model of HTML to include some limited ability to scope the request further. you can say "please give me all new emails newer than this date" as before, but now you can also specify "and i only care about the sender and subject."they're more limited than sql. its basically just a way to run a handful of functions like any bog standard RPC rig but in a way that you can chain a couple of them together remotely and in a single call.

I considered forking PleromaBE or SoapboxBE and making it so that it literally just relies on Redis or some other key-value store for caching things, just so that certain things don't need to keep getting pulled out of the DB over and over again. But then I decided against bothering. See that's been a recurring theme of mine for the past 6mo or so and FOSS. I just don't feel like fucking bothering, if I'm being honest.

@NEETzsche @Terry @e @marine Persistent relational storage life hack (c++ edition):1. Create a massive sparse file, as large as the underlying filesystem allows (usually 8-16 TB). Don't worry about actually having that much drive space available, nothing bad will happen until you actually try to write all 16 TB and don't have enough drive space.2. Memory map that sonofabitch. Again don't worry about not actually having 16 TB of ram. It's fine.3. Pick the most algorithmic efficient data structures for the data you want to store, if it were all in ram.4. Make sure those data structures all accept custom allocators.5. Write an custom allocator that returns pointers that refer to your memory mapped file.6. Allocate your data structures directly into the file backed address space, relying on Linux's vfs layer to do any necessary caching and readahead for you automagically (don't write server backends for operating systems other than linux, it's just not worth it)P.S. I've done all this except for 6. If my favorite hash table implementation was allocator-aware I would have used this at least once already.

@Terry @mombi @bot iirc, she lied about her age and told him she was 18. frankly, no matter how you feel about it, that shit happens a lot more frequently than people are willing to admit. The people you need to be concerned about are the ones who date minors who don’t lie about their age. I dated more than one of those and they’re the more concerning ones imo.

@bot @Terry @mombi I mean literally assaulted. Like with a weapon. As far as I know, nothing sexually assault related happened to the guy. Also, no, I’m more connected to knowledge of leg procedure. It’s super interesting and my parents were pushing me to be an attorney a lot when I was a kid. So I learned a lot and enjoyed learning it.

@icedquinn It's in Rails, so there are query types and output types and those query types call business logic for returning information (it's usually not a direct model mapping. Data is typically calculated or transformed for what the frontend devs need on the website). I can't remember what library in Rails we use, but we specify all the types and it autogenerates all the schema. @Terry @NEETzsche @e @marine

@NEETzsche @Terry @icedquinn @e @marine Stored procedures are the worst. Now you have business logic in your application code ... and your SQL schema! Pick a damn lane!

@djsumdog Stored procedures are great. They reduce multiple database calls to one. Through them, one call can do any combination of delete, update, insert and select statements, significantly reducing network load and processing time. They can then return multiple resultsets, unlike most SQL queries. Their performance advantages are real and actual, and your objection to them is "clean code" gobbledygook.GraphQL is soy bloatware.@Terry @icedquinn @e @marine

Mastodon has Status and Account entities in the API. Both rarely change and Status is maybe even immutable. Except for one problem: stats. Follower count, following count, reply, favourite, reblog count. We want to cache entities in RAM for performance, but we can't because the stats change every 5 seconds. But we don't always need stats in the UI, so GraphQL helps us solve this problem by letting us drop stats from the response. Then we can return cached entities resulting in better performance.

@djsumdog @Terry @icedquinn @NEETzsche @e @marine This argument doesn't hold up. Even the schema of your database is tied to your business logic in some way, so unless you're using an object database of sorts in your application, you already have your business logic split across DB and application. And at that point, you can use SPs to offer a more consistent database interface to your client.

Here's another problem that's solved with GraphQL:When I visit your list of followers, I want to display a "Follow/Unfollow" button next to each one. That actually requires a separate API request to /api/v1/relationships for each page. With GraphQL it can be done in a single request, because I can simply query both at once.
