Thinking this morning about how there are some topics and concepts that can *only* survive in an environment where saying incredibly daft things is incentivized by an algorithm. Move the concept outside of that protected bubble and into a human-controlled space and the humans within it roll their eyes and mutter "Oh heck off" and the admin flushes it away. That's why NFT/cryptocurrency marks end up on a vanishing minority of the few Fedi servers that'll indulge them.

Anti-vaxx is another thing you don't see much of here, if your admin is even halfway competent; the idea of exposing your users to that sort of nonsense is something that can only occur to a corporation, regular folks making their own social networks always block/remove that stuff.

The mechanism for deciding whether a concept is too daft for the Fediverse works like this, and I'll use the whole crypto/nft thing as an example: NFTDude joins Fedi on regularwebsite.example, posts NFT crap, their admin bans them and they go to (or create) another server called that allows NFT crap, let's call it nft.wank, and starts spamming the timeline. They won't get boosted by the algorithm because there isn't one, so their ideas have to be cool enough for someone to boost, and nobody does

So nftdude has to go with reply-guy shenanigans to insert himself into people's posts for attention, which causes him to get reported a bunch. But whoops, he's on nft.wank, he's not breaking THEIR rules!So the admin of your instance/server defederates from nft.wank completely, because NFTs are stupid and nobody wants to see their spam. Enough servers do that, nft.wank is isolated on their own wee island and without fresh blood it can't sustain itself.

Some ideas just can't survive outside of an environment where the silliest, most outrageous ideas are artificially amplified so that "engagement" goes up, and fedi for the most part Does Not Care about engagement. We don't want you stroking your phone all day, why would we, that's weird

Fedi is run by weird people, but they're still people, and have relatively normal Weirdness Tolerances. Still recognisably human, with concerns and values and interests and experiences that overlap with normal everyday folks - these are the best people to be taking care of things, because the alternative is corporations (which are not people) and billionaires (whose experience of life is so far removed from people that they're unrecognisable).

@ifixcoinops have you seen the "mastodon hosts gab" claims? I've been trying to figure out what it means but i'd guess they were or are federated?

@qkslvrwolf Gab runs on Mastodon code, aye. Mastodon doesn't host gab, I don't know off the top of my head who's hosting them but probably amazon. IIRC truth social runs Mastodon code too. The code is free and open-source so anyone - yeah, even Those Guys - can run a server.But they can't force anyone to federate with them, so these servers are quarantined. Only really incompetent admins allow them to interact. You'll probably never see a single one of their posts.

@enkiv2 @simon @ifixcoinops I can tell you definitely that one event may have been the straw that broke the camel's back, but it is not the sole reason. Tech-focused instances, and fosstodon in particular, are notorious for hosting lots of weird pests that no one in octodon's/my corner of fedi finds value in interacting with. You're welcome to create an alt if you can abide by code of conduct but you aren't entitled to engagement from your current site

@robotcarsley @enkiv2 @ifixcoinops have you seen the code of conduct for fosstodon? It's pretty decent and you can rely on mods to sort any nonsense. CWs are usually honoured too. I don't see any trolling or much reply-guy zealotry tbh https://fosstodon.org/about/more

@simon @enkiv2 @ifixcoinops I don't think I've seen outright abusive behavior there, but that would call for defederation, not muting. What I do see is a lot of weird pedants and unintentionally offputting interactions. That's fine! Do your thing! But you aren't entitled to the eyeballs of people who would rather socialize in a different milieu
