Harbour stops are hard work. Been schlepping gas bottles and food all day in the heat. Full on LPG and got most of the food. One more run to Eurospin, because it's probably our last port in Italy! Capperi, acciughe & passata! 🇮🇹 We're heading to the Baleares eventually, where food is more expensive and hard to find stores that aren't tourist traps.Still gotta take the pressure washer to the deck and do one more run with the jerrycans to the petrol station.Photo for @fitheach#CruisingLife

@yngmar Makes me wonder how boats get into such a state. Are they abandoned?

@fitheach A boatyard owner in Sicily explained this to me (no idea if true): The coastguard has the right to order any boatyard to haul out an impounded boat and put it ashore (meaning in their yard). If the boat is worth little, the racked up fees are probably not worth paying and they are then abandoned, by the owner and the government both. Creating a huge problem for the owner of the boatyard of course, who in many cases isn't even allowed to dispose of them as they're "evidence".

@fitheach In England, the marinas had similar "wreck corners", but after a few years of unpaid fees could make a court claim, take ownership (with 3 months notice taped to the boat) and then auction off the boats for a small fee, with the stipulation that the new owner must remove them. This got rid of those that were still worth anything at all, which probably isn't the case here.

@yngmar The explanation, and the process you described in England, both make sense. I'm not sure what else could be done. The boats I seen are mostly on the canal or the lochs which the canal joins. I'm not sure what the legal situation is in these locations. Although, I get the feeling that the boats are just abandoned, and the owners can't be traced.
