Children have become increasingly a focus of meaning in family life. Children, O’Connell Davidson (2005: 18) suggests, ‘are the “gift” that couples can give to each other in order to secure their own relationship as well as to establish social links with each other’s kin’. To achieve this, children need to be different from adults, to be in a morally bounded and protected realm, where they are absolutely dependent on older people.
