Ha, looks like I'm finally getting the hang of #OfflineIMAP. Wonder if now I can truly own and control all my email when combining it with #mutt?Side note: 3.2 GiB of email downloaded today. I'm surprised that it wasn't the 5 gigs or more I was expecting, so I guess yay for file de-bloat?

The main challenge here, I feel, will be to convert my muttrc to make use of *local* mailboxes rather those IMAP folders elsewhere. It's more of a change in paradigm where instead of having mutt poll the servers by itself, it reads from a local cache which gets itself updated by offlineimap every 5min or so.I think the main advantage of this is that I don't have to ask the mailservers for all the 5000+ mail headers every time I switch inboxes, but let's see!

@kzimmermann woah, are you doing this freehand or from a tutorial?

@g followed this quick post here just to get a grip on the OfflineIMAP config syntax etc first:https://hobo.house/2015/09/09/take-control-of-your-email-with-mutt-offlineimap-notmuch/And then started playing around with the mutt side of the integration myself. I'm very happy to say that I can now handle all my mail offline with the stack, and surprisingly wasn't very hard to do! I'll definitely do a writeup soon as a sort of tutorial if anyone else needs it ;)

@kzimmermann I have high hopes concerning offlineimap and davmail, because native mutt redownloads everything everytime I open it.Anyway, offlineimap still feels like a sealed book to me.Btw, how do you manage you contacts in mutt?

@maehder it was so to me as well until today! My setup is still not perfect (reading works, writing not exactly) so I'm still polishing it around the edges.I have an abook query hotkey set up in mutt from when I was learning to use it, but found out I don't really use it that much (guess I don't have that many contacts after all, eh). My abookrc is also pretty basic, almost no modifications.

@kzimmermann in (Al)pine you configure collections, and they can be IMAP as well as local. So there isn't a difference really. I guess you could even run a dovecot locally if you wanted. As to the mail volume a proper IMAP client should keep a cache of the message metadata and only poll the differences. For example switching accounts on k9mail takes only seconds even with a 2GB inbox.

@kzimmermann Lucky you :D. I have a ton of contacts and usually sync them using my nextcloud but that requires for mutt two extra pieces of software. So I am not really content with that solution, but it works somehow.
