an example of why vocals can carry a song fully, with no need for musical instruments:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-diB65scQU(Bob Ferrin - Don't Worry Be Happy)one of the songs i use as evidence of my theory that hit songs don't really need anything but the human voice, and why a good vocal track can be the life or death of a song.

if my line of work was "audio engineer", a crucial part of that would be to get the right people standing at the microphone.tech can't compensate for lack of talent.

i remember trying to get an otherwise intelligent relative of mine to understand the concept of hitting the right pitch when singing.i had her rigged up with a condenser mic and a DAW.she was completely and utterly unable to get it. she wouldn't be a semitone off. she was several whole notes off.and i wondered how this person was able to enjoy music at all. her sense of pitch was non-existent.

she was basically tone blind but she liked the idea of singing. i thought humans had an innate ability to understand pitch, but she simply did not. no matter how patient i was, even singing a few notes myself to show her, she just utterly failed to catch on. i was baffled that she couldn't hear it.

how can you not hear when things aren't on pitch?well... turns out, there are people who are completely deaf to it.

you would think they'd hear the pitches vibrate uncomfortably when they're not hitting the harmonic mathematical relationships, but i could not, despite best efforts, get her to notice that. she was utterly and completely oblivious to frequency beating.

demonstration of things being out of tune, for those who might not get the problem:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yia8spG8OmAthough i wonder if, if you're that tone deaf, you wouldn't even notice the difference. it becomes the most unpleasant-sounding toward the last 3rd of the video.

@thor my wife is exactly like this, cannot hear much pitch difference but loves singing anyway. I experiment on her constantly.I recently discovered she has always believed the first six notes of "Happy Birthday" use exactly the same pitches as the following six notes

@blaha there is totally a difference on the 5th and 6th notes on those patterns
