"The Register has learned that such projects account for up to a quarter of GitLab's hosting costs, and that the auto-deletion of projects could save the cloudy coding collaboration service up to $1 million a year."Seems reasonable to me.https://www.theregister.com/2022/08/04/gitlab_data_retention_policy/

I'm reversing my opinion.I was just looking at their latest 10-K filing with the SEC. Their 2021 revenue was $252 million.$1 million is barely a drop in that bucket. Granted, they're no Google or Apple, but whining over 1/252 of their revenue?https://www.sec.gov/ix?doc=/Archives/edgar/data/1653482/000162828022008836/gtlb-20220131.htm

Looks like they also reversed course after some severe backlash.https://www.theregister.com/2022/08/05/gitlab_reverses_deletion_policy/

@atoponce One quarter also suggests that the total hosting costs are only 4 million? That would make hosting costs overall be an incredibly small part of their overall costs? It seems to me like this is the result of a bean counter looking at the 25% number and not looking at overall costs.

@atoponce @zseri Also, I've got like a terabyte of backups in bottom tier cloud storage costing me like $1.50 a year. Source code isn't that big. If these projects are really not accessed much, no way they can't do a little engineering and port this stuff to dirt cheap hosting. $1m seems nuts to me. We can wait a few extra seconds to clone them.

@atoponce this is a general problem with all services that are free. It will eventually no longer be feasible to offer the free service. Either cover your ass at the beginning, and say things like "it's free until we hit X metric"... Or just don't give away your products for free.
