       I deal with a lot of breeds & their owners. Boykin Spaniel owners have to be the most enthusiastic of them all. When it comes to finding things in thick covered ground, forests of hardwoods, and boggy, damp bottomlands, Boykins are canine specialists. They became popular in South Carolina as turkey–hunting dogs. Back in the early 1900s, hunters navigating on South Carolina’s Wateree River used as vessels tiny “section boats” that were transported, and often used, in pieces.

       Each piece of this boat could fit one person and one dog, but most retrievers were too big. Boykins could not only fit into these small boats, but jump out of it without rocking the boat, and be hauled back into it without tipping both dog and hunter into the water. For this reason, one of the Boykin's nickname is “the dog that doesn’t rock the boat.” The other is “Swamp Poodle.” tickles our funny bone,

       In 1984, Governor Richard W. Riley proclaimed September 1 (the first day of dove hunting season) as Boykin Spaniel Day, this following the endorsement of the South Carolina Wildlife and Marine Resources Commission.Act No. 31, 1985 made the Boykin Spaniel the official dog of  South Carolina. These days, the breed is also used to find endangered turtles.
