I’ve decided to check our law on this regard, because why not, I’m not a lawyer but I’m a reader :blobcatfluffowo: There’s the Código Civil, the Ley del Registro Civil, and the Reglamento de la Ley del Registro Civil… doesn’t seem to me like either three of them establish any requirements for correction. At all. In fact, the Código Civil states the following about inheritance (pls don’t take this translation as legally valid or binding lol):“The error in name, surname or qualities of the inheritor does not harm the institution of inheritance when otherwise the named person might be truthfully known“

furthermore, it seems that if you want to use a shortened name like “Pepe” or “Xevi” (“hipocorístico sin sustantividad”), you might not be able to. Hipocorísticos con sustantividad, tho? no idea lol, seems you can change your legal name to them but maybe not use it as equivalent to your non-hypocoristic legal name :blobcatthink:

Furthermore, trans people are forced to use their deadname if it’s significantly different because it’s unequivocally not of their legal sex (:blobcatfacepalm:), but no word on names which are similar and neutral, particularly on whenever they can be used interchangeably (“con sustantividad”)

So yeah, there’s no definitions, there’s a lot of ambigous rules, a lot has been set based on whatever was deemed as social rules (yay very objective and assessable by a court), and so basically you’re at the mercy of whichever judge you have to deal with.Amazing.

@xerz that really sounds great (jk). You might also want to check this out (Wikipedia: Conflict of laws: Contracts):„Judges have accepted that the principle of party autonomy allows the parties to select the law most appropriate to their transaction. […] it also harms consumers as vendors often impose one-sided contractual terms selecting a venue far from the buyer's home or workplace.”https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conflict_of_laws#Contracts

It really is all arbitrary, is it

@xerz In Finnish and Swedish, the letters Å, Ä, Ö are literally distinct letters from A and O (not considered to be just the same letter with an accent, like in e.g. German), and those letters have been a real pain point occasionally when traveling to elsewhere in Europe.Because sometimes when the name is printed on some tickets for example, their systems just straight up replace letters, and then officials get pissed that the name doesn't match the name on the passport/ID.

@xerz Well, technically here (France), an alternative name can be used in legal paperworks, mostly because we still have fallback on testimonies for identification purposes. And heard the same thing about Germany in Gentoo's mailing list.
