This is why you don't use ANY centralized git pile, GitHub or otherwise: https://www.theregister.com/2022/08/04/gitlab_data_retention_policy/

Just run a little Gitea man, it only takes a few minutes to set up. Or self-host GitLab if you really need it

At least Git was designed to be decentralized, so moving your repo is generally easy. The surrounding stuff like issues is usually the hard part

@quad I wonder how far along gitea is with those ideas for federated git repositories :akko_thonk: (or at least federated users, so that you don't constantly have to make a new user on every gitea instance just to collaborate)

@quad would be so much easier if all that crap was stored in a dot-folder as metadata in a semi-standard format

@xerz Most likely the majority of savings comes in stuff like database size, lowering the amount of ram needed for decent performance, or speeding up background tasks or migrations. But in general, this is why you should either pay for a service, or just run it yourself

@quad at least Microsoft has nearly infinite amount of money, that they can pour into GitHub.I will continue to use GitHub as free file sharing and their ToS won't stop me.

@valerauko Would be nice indeed. I can't imagine some markdown files in a folder would be difficult to manage and serve as issues or a wiki. The only problem would probably be handling attachments

@quad why? unless you're checking in 100mb+ binaries, git should be able to handle anything just fine

@valerauko You underestimate how many oversized JPGs and massive log files you'll find attached to issues. There's probably many projects out there where the issues and other discussions are at least 50x the size of the repo itself

@quad I hope they hurry up with it. The idea that I would need separate gitea accounts all over the place just to contribute has been the single biggest letdown I've had with it. If at least user registrations could federate, that would already solve a lot.

@a1ba When I was low on money I used to just have a cheap ramnode box. (was $15/year for the cheapest at the time).Did just about everything I needed out of a server despite the low ram, be it git hosting, sharing files, or acting as a proxy.

@quad i probably do for sure...i guess ipfs or magnet links could work around that but then it's not just a git clone to set it up anymore

@quad I understand that. If I really need something, I can just upload it to my share on mentality.rip server. But on other hands... well... I literally uploaded build artifacts to a repository on GitHub because it's free, and I don't care what Microsoft thinks about it.

@quad there is at least one project that adds issue tracking to Git by putting issues into the repository but you'd still need to avoid git forges in case they prune objects they don't recognize
