Do you think you'd ever want to buy a piece of land and build on it?If so, where?

@urusan Have you looked into where that might be?

@dualhammers A little bit. We're still at least a few years away from actually doing this. There's options in most states, but many specific local building codes will be hostile to them.

@urusan Interesting. Are these actually better or cheaper than square-framed homes? Seems like they use similar building materials

@dualhammers The domes made by pacific domes use very different materials. It uses steel supports and a plastic membrane, which admittedly isn't that different from a tent.Cheaper? Yes, very. The Pacific Domes type clock in around $20/sq ft and last 12-20 years (this cost doesn't include winter insulation). The Natural Spaces type is around $150/sq ft but last 50 years. In comparison, a traditional roof costs $500/sq ft. The entire dome structure is cheaper than just the roof.

@dualhammers Better? That's harder to say, since it depends on so many factors.Dome houses have a lot of advantages, like they're highly resistant to natural disasters and have excellent insulation ratings for their thickness. That said, they are shape-constrained, and the roof can get really high. Also, while the walls are surprisingly steep, they are still curved. There's a lot of variability from home to home as well, a well built square frame home will be better than a cheap dome.

@dualhammers For most of the other issues, it's hard to tell apart "these were real issues" and "the old dome houses were mostly built by amateurs using scrap". I'm pretty sure there's real solutions for most issues today. Also, looking at the Natural Spaces domes more, there's a lot of hybrid construction that's interesting.

@urusan the website didn't make that very clear. That price was so low I was curious if that was just their price for the size of the plans

@dualhammers So, as a concrete example, they have this kit for the complete outer shell: https://naturalspacesdomes.com/dome-system/pricing-and-planning/prefab/26-51/A 38' high profile dome with 2-3 doors would cost around $38k and provide 1134 sq ft on the floor, and you could build a second story with such a tall dome.So that's around $33.50/sq ft for the outer shell. It also needs roofing, a foundation/floor, and all the internals. This also doesn't include labor.

@dualhammers The roof material for such a dome would cost around 2268 sq ft * $2 = $4,536 (about $4/sq ft of floor space). Foundation would depend a lot on what you're building it on, but it sounds like $10/sq ft is likely. So that's around $47.50/sq ft just for the core exterior materials. So, $150/sq ft seems pretty likely to be a good ballpark for the final finished cost.

@dualhammers It's a somewhat lower labor kind of construction. The Internet says framing a 2,000 sq ft house with 2 stories takes around 8 days, but a similar dome house takes around 1 day. That said, the labor involved is less common, since it's an unusual construction.

@urusan I wonder what the sample size is for the construction times. My gut tells me not huge, and the people doing the studies perhaps are not unbiased.
