I let my arch installation go for two years.I'm tempted to go back with Debian, but I hate having to setup all of the backports to run moderately recent software. And it's not fun anymore to compile shit and track down dependencies. The upside of Debian is that if I ignore it for two years, when I do decide to update, it'll go off without a hitch.I'm thinking I might give Pop! _OS a shot.

Any recommendations? If you suggest a distro, a couple of supporting statements as to why I should use your recommendation would help out a lot.

@FortyTwo Fedora (I use the KDE desktop spin, as it seems the most integrated). It has up to date software like a rolling release (Arch) but less likely to break if you don't use it a lot. I'm not 100% on how resilient the upgrade process is between long bouts of non usage though. It installs using btrfs filesystem enabling fast compression for lots of disk space savings, depending on your workload (great for me as a hobbyist software dev).

@FortyTwo I used to use Ubuntu, on the 6 month cycle. If not used for a while, you have to update to each release you've missed. Then I decided to go more opensource with Debian but I wanted some more fresh packages, and started using bullseye and mixing in testing packages, which I found can cause some issues. Now on, Fedora its really up to date, but if you have bad internet, its a lot to d/l ,and would suggest Ubuntu on the 6 month cycle, recognizing you'll be 6+ months back on software.
