@newt No kidding, I wish they still made phones with a real keyboard like that. I HATE typing on a touch screen.

@methyltheobromine n900 supports 3g. But also, n900 is a piece of shit of a phone. I had it. Trust me, it isn't even remotely as good as Linux people would like you to believe.

@methyltheobromine huh.. everything?1. The keyboard is bad. You can't touch type on it, because the keys are almost flat and you can barely feel them with your thumbs. Also, the layout is just meh.2. The screen is small. What's funny, it's actually smaller than the previous device in the series, n810. I had both and n810 was more usable partly due to that.3. The touchscreen is resistive, not capacitive. No multitouch, poor sensitivity, all those issues. Yeah.4. The software was just pure ugly awful piece of shit. Out of the box, there weren't even 2G/3G switching or USSD requests. They were added by community patches later. Nokia really fucked up with the software part.5. One thing I remember, the storage partitioning and mount points were beyond stupid. You needed to repackage every debian package to work on n900 solely because of its partitioning scheme, because /usr didn't have any space allocated for it. Again, Nokia screwed up here.6. Almost software that was anywhere near being useful on that phone. A few apps developed by the community was all you could get. Linux desktop stuff was barely even usable.7. Phone calls implementation was crap. Oftentimes, calling just failed for no reason and required a reboot.8. Proprietary drivers for battery (incl. charging), graphics, maybe other things. I don't remember.etc etcBasically, it was a cool device for hacking or geeking around. But it was nearly unusable as a phone. I actually carried a dumb phone around for calls, because n900 was just that bad.

@Placholdr @methyltheobromine especially given that you probably wouldn't want more than one window at a time on a screen that small.

@methyltheobromine @Placholdr true. But why the hell would you need tiling in the first place? Any WM can do full screen windows and alt-tab between them.>that sounds awful tbh... why can't we have nice thingsBecause Linux is shit and adapting it for a phone would result in an almost complete re-implementation of everything. Why do you think Android exists?

@methyltheobromine @Placholdr hahaha keyboard controls work great on a full size keyboard. On a phone, especially that small, doing anything with a keyboard is just hell.Curiously, I remember that oftentimes I didn’t even bother sliding out the physical keyboard and typed on screen instead. It was just faster that way, because they physical keyboard required a hard push for the press to register.If you wanna see what a really good physical keyboard on a phone looks like, try searching a blackberry. Passport was probably the best there was. Or Blackberry Classic, for a smaller phone. N900 wasn’t anywhere near being that good.

@methyltheobromine @Placholdr ah well… both Blackberry and Nokia should be put into the hall of fame of how to have a huge portion of the market and fuck it all up in the span of mere years.Blackberry had around 30% of the smartphone market in North America in 2010, less than 2% by 2015.Nokia went from ~60% to nothing between 2007 and 2014.Imagine being able to fail so hard! :comfyderp:

@newt @methyltheobromine i cant lie i think manufacturers and designers shouldve went the way of making mobile devices as smaller and smaller laptops but with additional telecommunications ability.maybe some where similar to mnt pcoket reform.

@Placholdr @methyltheobromine I have a GPD pocket. It’s just bad. My iPhone is a lot more usable.Look, you just can’t have a full keyboard for touch typing in under 10 inches or so. Anything smaller would require sacrifices. If you wanna try it, go buy a GPD Pocket and put a 4G modem inside it. Yes, it’s possible.

@Placholdr @methyltheobromine it wouldn’t be a pocket-sized device. Phones are phones, laptops are laptops. Any attempt to combine them I have seen so far just sucks ass.

@newt @methyltheobromine @Placholdr nokia e7 had a nice one after n900, but it ran s^3 so infinitely less interesting/usable
