@poo @FelonyCommitter @Royper @grey A lot of it is age. You walk through the USA and outside the eastern portions, you’d be amazed at how much of it was built within the last 70 years. Pretty much everything is new, modern. Around here, most homeowners built their house on empty fields and scrub oak, so it’s a little silly NOT to use all that additional space for breathing room. Hell, there are some places I’ve passed through where they’re tearing down buildings made in the 1970’s as being ‘too old’. America’s just a very weird design style. Lots of ephemeral, cheesy materials that don’t age well, fads, it’s all very of-the-moment and cheesy. I know a guy who inherited an old sears home from the 30’s and it’s seen as terribly old to all his friends. It’s only 90!

@poo @WashedOutGundamPilot @FelonyCommitter @Royper @grey A lot of the really small houses are post-WWII council houses. Built really cheap and quickly over 20-30 years to fit war vets and boomers. There hasn't been a big housing boom since. Post-war council houses often suck ass, most of them were not made to last 50+ years. But like everything else temporary, they ended up permanent.
