Interestingly, I watched the documentary on The Rainbow last night and Gene Simmons made the comment, from 1966 until 1988 you could name 100 bands who are instant legends, but from 1988 until today, you can’t name 5. I’m not sure about 5, but it has definitely been lacking for the last 35 years.

And while the 1st two hours of MTV is hardly the R&R HOF, it certainly proves how much the music industry has changed in the last 40 years (not for the better imo)

@isaac a couple of those are borderline IMO, but I can see where the argument can be made. I’d toss in Linkin Park, Oasis, and (although I can’t stand them) Greenday.

@isaac but no where near as easy to come up with the sort of list you can come up with from the early 60’s thru the late 80’s

@obihahn @isaac I agree. I'd add the Traveling Wilburys since they started in 1988 but then everyone in the group was already famous. That's after I looked into my music library. I have almost nothing after 1990 and most are groups that were around before then (like U2 or Santana) or rereleased in some greatest hits album.

@isaac @mhjohnson same with me. I’ve got a few, like Fuel, Blink 182, Sun-41, but I can’t think of any good “new” bands from within about the last 15 years. The kids that opened the Def Leppard/Motley Crue tour a couple of weeks ago we’re good though. I may give them a look, Classless Act.

@obihahn @mhjohnson I just scanned my music library on my phone. Besides the few I mentioned previously, the only two “new artists” since 1988 in my library are Kanye West and Tycho.

@obihahn My buddies and I used to love to joke in the '80's about the triple-names, where the band/song/album all had the same name, like Icehouse Icehouse Icehouse.
