@luck002 A modern Intel or AMD laptop with absolutely zero blobs is probably still several years away, but #System76 is making strides towards this goal, and so I'm happy to fund their engineering.

@codewiz I do, when I'm on the road, and the trackpad is actually disabled --- much to the dismay of people who try to borrow the laptop.When tethered on the desktop , it's irrelevant with a mouse, of course.

@penguin42 @codewiz You know that they don’t have to push the technical details to the customer. They can charge everyone a flat dollar price and pay the sales tax behind the scenes because it is their responsibility in the first place. Putting the tax as a line item is a tactic to say their price is lower.

@greypilgrim @penguin42 But it is the right thing to do for government transparency, IMHO.I have no problem paying a fair sales tax like anyone else who lives in California, but I'm quite opposed to hidden markups on online sales added by CA COUNTY, CA CITY, LOS ANGELES CO LOCAL and LOS ANGELES COUNTY DISTRICT.Come on, not even in Italy they ever did this...

To put it another way: without control, fiscal pressure tends to creep up without a corresponding benefit to citizens.Los Angeles skims an additional 4.25% on all purchases made by 13M people. They also collect regular property taxes, water, trash, and probably some percentage of all paychecks...But does this money turn into good infrastructure and public services? There's a 'council tax' that's for anyone living in a property (based on value of property), then there are 'business rates' for commercial properties rather than homes. Council taxes are paid separately, not out of your pay. Utilities are also paid separately to utility companies not the local authorities.

I tried shipping to other US cities where I have lived or spent a lot time:Los Angeles CA: 6% + 4.25%San Francisco CA: 6% + 2.625%Mountain View CA: 6% + 3.125%Cambridge MA: 6.25% + 0% !!!There's simply too much variation within the US for a merchant to apply a flat rate to everyone and eat the difference.@greypilgrim @penguin42

They could take small losses in some areas too like franchise strategy.They could do it and it doesn’t have to be complicated.Sounds like that’s not what you want though. What do you want, the money to be more centralized so it looks like it all goes to one government entity?
