Does #forestry fedi have any tips for dealing with pine bark beetles? My neighbor has been cutting down impacted trees-- great on him for caring about forest health but it's the middle of the beetle active season, won't they just infect another tree?

@grumpy around here, we have ash borers, and the municipal solution is cutting down the trees and shredding them. they can't get into more trees if they're chopped to bits.

@grumpy Sometimes it's required by law? I don't know any other solutions (other than trying to be quick about it) and do some prevention measures (but I don't really know if those still work)

@jollysea that's fair. I should check the local ordinances. I was reading up on some recommendations from the Minnesoda department of forestry. But their definition of a drought year and California's definition are much different heh

@grumpy What part of the country, which pine?Generally, I believe it’s agreed, taking down the infected trees is considered good practice, at least with Southern Pine Beetles. There are good resources and discussions online if you or your friend would like to read up.Here’s a USDA discussion focused on SBP (Southern Pine Beetle):https://www.srs.fs.usda.gov/pubs/gtr/gtr_srs140/gtr_srs140_399.pdf

@justthisguy thanks! I'm dealing with Ponderosa Pine beetles in northern California. I've lost five trees so far but first frost means I can take a breather. I've learned there isn't much I can do but pray for rain. The beetles will always be around, waiting for weak trees
