"Upgraded" to Ubuntu 22.04, GNOME crashes on login back to the login screen. Luckily I already had a good desktop, LXDE, installed so I just logged into that and it works find.

@realcaseyrollins @lnxw37b3 I upgraded Ubuntu 18.04 today to 20.04 and it went smooth, just the upgrade then to 22.04 had problems. But I've been using Lubuntu 20.04 on like 10 machines and had no problems I can think of.

@Moon @realcaseyrollins Agree'd LXDE is a solid barebones desktop environment. I really don't like Gnome 3 or Unity. When those got big back in 12.04LTS that's what made me ditch Linux for awhile and go back to windows. I plan on going back to Linux again though once Windows 10 is EoL. I really don't like what Microsoft is doing with Windows 11 at all.

@realcaseyrollins@lnxw37b3 @Moon I would recomdend to use the opertunity to switch distributions.Ubuntu will push you to use snappy, wich performs quite bad and has lots of other issues. If you don't want to "travel to far" from it, there are mint, pop OS and other ubuntu based distibutions which skip snappy.

@realcaseyrollins@lnxw37b3 @Moon I think the DE (KDE, GNOME, etc.) are most importent choice for "low end" devices. Also, newer versions offen come with performance improvements (on Linux at last).Arch is very lean and fast, but you'll need ways to recover from bad updates. (Backups etc.)Manjaro is said to be more relayable.

@landel @realcaseyrollins @lnxw37b3 if you want a full desktop on a low end system you can't do better than LXDE so Lubuntu is a great choice. I prefer the look of MATE desktop however.

@landel @realcaseyrollins @Moon I would say Arch is not for most users, even experienced technical users who wish to use their computers rather than tinker with their computers. It *should not be recommended* except when one already knows the person has the knowledge, time, and desire to deploy fixes for breakage caused by Arch's unstable updates.A Debian / Ubuntu derivative with Lxde / Lxqt as the desktop is likely the better way to go, as it will already be familiar to him.

@landel @Moon @realcaseyrollins I have run both Arch and Gentoo. Arch required constant fiddling because their bleeding edge updates broke things. I only had that happen once with Gentoo. Also, some I have often seen Arch users on the Fediverse alerting one another that some update requires manual intervention. So again, do not recommend Arch to people who just want to use their computers. It is not suited for such users.

@lnxw37b3 @Moon @realcaseyrollins Everyone seams to overestimate the nessesare anount of twinkering with arch, you can twinker the hell out of it, but usualy you install your packages, as in any other distro, and are done.Twinking is sometimes nessesairy (like it was to get it running) but thats rare after that point.
