GitHub users on their way to fork every single software project on earth and not change a single thing.

But really why do people do this? 60% of repositories on most GitHub users are just forks of some other software project with NOTHING contributed to them, Slowly getting outdated. What's the point?

@colinsmatt11 @xmoo forks also preserve access in case upstream deletes or privates the repo, as happened with High Fidelity. it's also required to have a fork if you want to send any patches so they might just be forks with one feature branch that are then forgotten.they don't cost github very much. storage deduplication and all that.

@colinsmatt11 @xmoo that stuff is now monetized by co-pilot and since microsoft owns it the whole platform is also funded by government welfare.so good luck with that :blobcatthumbsup:

@xmoo That's because they're not forks, they're a broken way to do contributions to upstream.

@icedquinn @xmoo Which doesn't really works, github has a massive history of deleting repositories for whatever reason even without the random bomb that is the DMCA.It's cloning eggs in a basket.
