@thatbrickster @alex you are absolutely correct. a lot of fluff from the guy linked in this thread in creating a 'fork' of pleroma that also went nowhere. any time anyone has asked me to fix, install or otherwise maintain pleroma for them i have installed, replaced or reinstalled with soapbox-be. it's much more active and gets regular fixes from poast and etc others running dev branch that end up getting unstreamed to pleroma. other people such as the dev of akkoma adding things, but the developers of pleroma have just been sitting around arguing with eachother. absolutely sad state of the project

Hardcoding routes for all different frontends into the backend doesn't seem like a proper solution to me here. It does need to be investigated to support all FEs, and not have a case-by-case thing when we could design it to do without.

@dielan @alex Tusooa maintains glitch-lily which is MastoFE compatible with Pleroma.It's more of a concept, really. Many people use MastoFE still, many people use Soapbox, many use PleromaFE; you get the idea.Different frontends do exist; but really, even if only one FE did ever exist, my opinion would still stand. Pleroma's development origins were about replacing parts of GNU Social gradually; I'd like to let people do the same, and to ease that up if possible. If we can also make it easier for everyone to fully customise their FEs and what comes with it, and share those FEs without relying to code modifications on the backend, I believe it would just be best overall.

There's a lot of history so I'm keep it simple.Free software started because people weren't allowed to do whatever they wanted on their device without getting permission and tools you need to work on it from the manufacturer, this wasn't the case few years ago.So they just started to make everything by themselves and share it between themselves.It was getting popular but corporations were against it for various reasons, so some people rebranded it as open source to make them be part of it.Thus corporate influence started to happen because it was mostly free work for them due to certain licenses.This interchange of people with corporation as their first priority led to many of freedom types leave because they didn't like it, some stayed and delt with corporate bs.Eventually becoming a place for other people with not freedom as priority taking the majority portion of it. Thus them pushing their own agendas.

i get the point that the focus is different with the more corporate open source projects, but i dont believe that that's where the other kind of free software radicalization comes from, where its not only about making free software but also that people that use it or contribute to it have to have specific labels and be against x, y and z. like those people are clearly committed to the free software part, but extend it with ideas they believe to be good, because they believe thats how they can achieve their utopian vision, but instead i think they are polarizing the free software community and creating more friction.

@dielan @alex @helene For Pleroma it should've been better to work on a single frontend. Like, nobody in Mastodon or Misskey died from not having their custom front end being an instance home page. But instead, Pleroma got two more extra frontends developed at the same time. It's not like it was a hobby, they had funding from MFC back then. To me, it's obvious mismanagement.As for Soapbox, in the original patch discussion, there were notes from other developers that it's pretty hacky solution, the discussion slowed down and after a few months it was shamelessly merged once Alex got maintainer role. This was what outraged everybody in Pleroma, not the patches.

Tapping on a link in Tusky should be able to import a remote user or post to your instance, rather than opening a browser on every occasion. It's just a smooth experience that hides complexity of federated network under querying home instance if that URL looks like something ActivityPub-like.Therefore, if FE wants different format, it somehow should notify the backend. Since there is a frontend installer thing (???) in Pleroma, backend could set up routes dynamically. Or support them all at once. Or have a standard.

I'm not sure how many people run it considering how there's jank ass shit out there like "Soapbox on an unfederated Mastodon instance".Going forward it'll be interesting to see if anyone will be using it as opposed to mainline Pleroma, which has already been forked a bit as of late due to issues with newer versions and missing features.

URIs are meant to be treated as "obscure atoms", which tends to make things a bit annoying in some situations (searches, Husky, etc), but I'm sure that could be solved too (different Content-Type on request, or using WebFinger for more than users? etc, etc).But it's something that can be worked towards, I'm certain, and would overall benefit everyone.

I said it was mismanagement, not only from Pleroma side but also on MFC side that looked like a child with ADHDAnd that's why they had fedi-fe, kenoma, roma, some unnamed Android/iOS clients and so on. Also, AdminFE for some reason a standalone admin panel that should've instead re-used existing PleromaFE code.
