important advice regarding Bluetooth headphones:if given headphones don’t have smartphone app then don’t buy them!rationale: only with app one can do stuff like custom assignment of buttons and above all equalizer to fit what you are listening - music or speech/podcasts or else:

@Humpleupagus Lame! With wire you have to rely on inferior codecs

Wire is faster with far less error-checking.CAD operators use a wired mouse for speed. Why wouldn't you get better/clearer data for sound through wires?

@epic @Humpleupagus @CSB You technically lose some quality thru Bluetooth, but I doubt the difference is discernible in most situations for most people. We are talking about some pretty small speakers. And most people are listening to mp3s not a lossless format. I totally agree with CSB, the feature set available and wireless convenience is worth it, for most people in most situations. Audiophiles know who they are what they want.

Shhh. I think I saw some non-audiophiles just standing over there (don’t look), and they were just quietly absorbing information. Ok, not always so quietly. 😜

@epic @CSB @CliffordTheBigRedDog Well... If CSB isn't listening on a pair of Sennheiser open back, wired, 1/4” studio reference headphones, and comparing the audio output to his Yamaha HS8s, I just can't take him seriously. 🙄

@CSB Can't you use USB DAC with most phones nowadays? Well, if you dig that deep, I think that instead of relying of a phone you should already have a separate DAP which has a decent DAC, amp, it's own storage and a battery that is separate from phone's and you don't have to carry it on your head.@Humpleupagus

@Suiseiseki @CSB Unironic banger post. The determining factor of headphones should be the quality of drivers (phones) that the cans have and the sound signature given the type of audio you are going to be listening to.Bluetooth apps are an IoT type meme.

@Suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com @CSB@noagendasocial.comit's optional you dumboheadphones work even without the app. mine do. it's just to setup custom tuning and custom buttons. what, do you think there's an open source standard to set those up that they should follow? don't be silly.

@ink8 >"open source standard"I don't see how source code is meant to exactly pertain to a standard - try to avoid making new oxymorons.Have a closer look at my profile image.Sure it'll be optional for initial models, but don't you worry, eventually they won't even work without some proprietary software running.

@CliffordTheBigRedDog @epic @Humpleupagus @CSB I hear BT 5.0 is good and not compressed but I choose to us a note9 as a preamp and DAC on my home stereo. I port out using USB to RCA and it sounds great.I use AIRDROID to control it from my primary phone. The app I use is Neutron Player for android and is not for faint of heart and really fir audiophiles who want to control EVERYTHING in there system. There is no sub $10k preamp Dac that can touch it.

@CSB I hate this Sony app. I had to install it just to force LDAC codec on android (it used AAC without the app). You can't turn off noise canceling by default (every time you turn on headphones it's ON)...

@ink8 @CSB @Suiseiseki open sound control is a standard some people came up with decades ago to talk to music and sound hardware in a way that wasn't MIDI.it's basically a simplified RPC framework that has already been established in the music world. so you send messages to paths like /equalizer/enabled or /equalizer/bands/0/q to change the resonance of the first band. and most equalizers only have around 5-10 so a whole preset to have the equalizer have a flat response curve is like/equalizer/band/0/amp 50/equalizer/band/1/amp 50/equalizer/band/2/amp 50/equalizer/band/3/amp 50/equalizer/band/4/amp 50the only question is how to adapt that to blutoof but i'm almost certain it's not too hard.
