For people who don't do guns, 5.56 is already on the high end at ~3000 feet per second. Claiming that any gun shoots bullets at 4x that velocity is absurd.

Well this one at least is technically true. They're referring to the XM5 the Army just selected for its next-gen gun, which was commissioned in part over the 5.56's limited ability to penetrate body armor. The XM5 fires 6.8.

@dave are they talking about the new 6.8 thing...?I heard it can get up to 80,000 psi in chamber pressure, like as opposed to 5.56's 60,000 if thats what theyre thinking of, but afaik the 6.8 has comparable velocity on the low end.

Correct. A high-velocity rifle round, like the 5.56 that an AR-15 shoots, will exit the barrel at around 0.9-1km/s. The highest-velocity round there is would be the 220 Swift, at around 1.4km/s. There is no way you could (or would even want to) push standard gun technology to eject your bullet at anywhere near 4km/s.
