If we want to increase popularity of open source social networks - fediverse. Should we care and create content on the mainstream social networks like the Facebook, Snapchat, TikTok etc. to increase popularity fediverse?

@vilda Complicated question. It depends on who you want your target audience to be.The fediverse as a whole is filled with misfits, people who have been banned or couldn't tolerate fb/twitter. People who want to talk about or create content that violates fb/twitter, free speech extremists and highly technical folks who think privacy is actually important. Not too many like, normal average folks. Attracting those takes getting people here that are good family friendly content creators; and I just, I don't think it'll happen to scale. The only success I've seen is large podcast folks maintaining instances, but they aren't the most uh, stable? So I can't say I know. But I've lived through bbs's, usenet, /., SA, totse, 4ch, 8ch, early twitter. If fedi ever really takes off it'll be censored terribly with only nodes on a pre-approved list and communicating with the isolated ones will be impossible. It's already happening doesn't mastodon hardcode a blocklist?Islands of truth, freedom and control, like it's always been.

@complicatedRegrets Well, you have a point, but I think it's better than the current state of social networks. You can use existing software to build our "groups" of islands on the internet. Is that possible with FB, IG or TikTok? No

@vildaI think the key is to port currently good Linux programs like Krita, Inkscape, Blender and LibreOffice to windows, encourage their use there and then tell them the experience is better on Linux.

@vilda Not denying the tech isn't better, it's just the people using it are the "problem" for "regular folk" adoption.

@vilda The constant argument made in favor of the proprietary networks is the network effect. "Everyone is there!"You want to encourage movement to somewhere new, quit the old cold turkey, and make sure you can get as many people as possible doing the same thing, to create a new network effect elsewhere.
