All of my best #gamedev ideas feel like monumental efforts to get done: sprawling worlds with extensive quests, complex characters with semantic dialogue, puzzles with multiple solutions, tracking player choice, reputation systems, minigames, hybrid genres...

I keep trying to simplify my projects, but it's honestly the hardest thing. If a game project feels too simple, my motivation to work on it just kind of gradually fizzles out over time.Unfortunately, I've been so burned out that I can barely do my favorite hobby.

In 15 years of attempts, I have yet to release a single game, big or small. The silver lining is that I've managed to learn how to do some really cool things with AGS, like building a Quest Tracker or a fakeOS or an Emotional State Monitor or a Bespoke Interaction System

The thing that makes me sad is that I'll go over my unfinished stuff, and still see tons of potential. But, it's so exhausting to do it all by myself.Trying to do programming, art direction, animation, and writing all by myself just feels too hard.

@sean I know the feeling, albeit in a different field, I start many pet projects and they always seem easy to do at first only to become abandoned when the real effort becomes clear.

@sean How many unfinished projects do you have? Pick one and play with it when you feel like it, and in a few years you will have something. When you burn out and your motivation goes away, go do something else for a few months and return to it later. And switch modes - spend a while programming with placeholder art & dialog, then spend some time writing or doing art, so you're not working on the same kind of thing all the time. And try to enjoy every little feature you build as a success.

@sean I'm there with you. I have sooo many interesting projects laying around but the creative process is just so slow I that I lose my inspiration and original vision partway through and my interest wanders in a different direction (or morphs into melancholy/depression).I sometimes cycle around and picks one of them back up. However in many cases I've sort of "outgrown" them after having gained experience, knowledge and/or newly developed taste in implementation method/approach, and this forms another barrier to the creative process by requiring a significant amount of rethinking and reworking. My preferences in what tools and methods to use (whether they currently exist or not!) are quite specific and I struggle to compromise on those, and when there simply aren't any satisfying options I'm overburdened by what needs to be done in order to realise my ideas.I cling to the hope that one day I will find or create the tools I need to realise an idea, and then successfully to do so.

@eviloatmeal @sean @gunchleoc Not in #game development, but one of most interesting dev realms to me. Think Sean expresses a general issue with these projects so majorly huge. I see countless people dreaming about very interesting #GameDesign.I would imagine there is opportunity to get a budding #GameDev community going on #Fediverse. One that focuses on collaborative gamebuilding.Might start with just a #Guppe group to find interested folks.Inspiring too are #FediJam by @houkimenator

@eviloatmeal @sean @gunchleoc @houkimenator Personally a dream I'd love to see come about is Federated #Gaming.Think there's lotta opportunity, but it needs a community driving the vision.Hugely inspiring I found the notion of the #Fantasary, part of #Spritely by @cwebber https://spritelyproject.org/#fantasary

@sean I hear you! I'm the same with too many unfinished projects... Last year I started a new project with the absolute intention of finishing it. I set a deadline for myself and allowed myself to create something truly dreadful. In the end, it turned out to not be half bad. It's a dance tune (you can find the link in my bio). I also got an accountability buddy, which helped immensely. Will be producing another track soon-ish, probably with the same constraints (and aiming a little higher). 😊

@sean l I've been building a personal website for at least 10 years now. Every time I try I get distracted by the css, hate my own designs and then destroy the instance again. You're not alone 😅

@Gina @sean I have one of those and I do big rewrites once every few years to improve it. It is live though https://www.foramnagaidhlig.net/I usually do collaborative stuff like localization, but sometimes I just need to fiddle around without having any responsibility.Yes, the project is so old that I have a splash page 🤣

@sean I know this feeling. It's the feeling that hits me every time somebody suggests I self-publish. Trying to write, work with an editor, work with an artist, generate formats, submit to outlets, and do marketing and advertising just feels like too much.I already have a full-time job, so making my writing into a side hustle just doesn't feel worthwhile.
