Cricket Wireless (AT&T)'s recent network upgrades have forced a lot of customers to upgrade phones unnecessarily. Fuck them, their terrible support staff and their shitty e-waste generating policies. My latest post is about AT&T and avoiding planned obsolescence:https://battlepenguin.com/tech/cricket-wireless-att-and-planned-obsolescence/

@djsumdog Yep they killed service for the iphone 4s i had for years. It was 4g too, no reason for them to kill it becuase They latered the 3g network. Now i just use it around the house and for public wifi.

@djsumdog I recently upgraded my phone. I was using a basic smart phone (samsung) for almost 5 years. It was supposed to get an OS update not long after I got it (it was on the Oreo update roadmap) but never got it. It was so slow and crappy, I finally broke down and got a new phone with at least android 11. Other than that, I haven't had any problems with Cricket.

@SamiOh If you're willing to do the work and install an alternative rom like Lineage (There's Lineage+microG if you have apps that require Google services), the device will go back to close to its original speed. Google Services keep updating in the background, even if the device is no longer supported; and the new versions slow the phone to a crawl.Removing Google services (microG emulates some of them with empty stubs) can increase battery life by several hours.

@djsumdog I should probably do that. I'm capable of doing it/following directions to do it 😂 I'll do it on my old phone to figure it out before I take on the new phone. But I really need to do more de-googling on it.

@djsumdog many such cases. t-mobile forced me off my old nokia phone by obsoleting some 4g bands then i would constantly be getting downgraded to 3g. before buying the 1+6 phone i did a lot of research on which bands are used by various providers and these 1+ support a lot of different bandsno 5g support on this phone, but i dont expect that to be an issue for a while because 5g is very short range and would require a lot of installed antennas

@djsumdog I just had to drop my Xperia XA2 Ultra for T-Mobile because they never cleared it to do VoLTE. Plus side now I have no excuse for putting it on SailfishOS just to see if I could live on it.

@Beefki I have a normal Xperia XA2 I keep as a backup phone ... guess that one won't work if I need it. That's such rubbish it has to be "cleared" for VoLTE since I think that's entirely in software. Any current LineageOS build should support it.

@djsumdogI've been wondering what type of person would be ignoring the years of warnings, the free replacement phone offers, bill credit offers and all the rest, just to continue using a device that hasn't gotten security patches since two presidents ago...I always figured it'd be boomers. Not technical people who should know better.Spectrum isn't unlimited. There is no reason to allocate a sizeable chunk of it, across the entire network, *and* maintain the core and radio equipment for it.

@r000t My phone is only a little over two years old. It runs a pretty recently version of Lineage+microG. It its patches. I never got any notices from Cricket about my phone going out of date, ever. No e-mails. No texts. Literally zero. The phone has LTE, 4G .. and obviously it still works on T-Mobile without any issue (event with VoLTE. Yes, the VoLTE is turned on in Lineage, and it works fine on T-Mobile, just not on AT&T). This has NOTHING to do about spectrum. I'm not even talking about an old 3G phone. There is no technical reason AT&T should drop these devices except for arbitrary cutoffs and a badly designed forced VoLTE implementation.Phones should last a minimum of 5~6 years. I realize things can't be supported forever, but supporting anything less just makes the e-waste problem even worse.

@djsumdog @r000t there are like 30 or so 4g bands globally and older phones tend to only support a handful of them, so carriers can drop one and they know a bunch of people will be forced to upgrade devices, or switch carriers- but this is beyond most people's ability to figure out. the service tech will just say 'phone no worky, buy a new one' and most people will do that

@djsumdog unsure how, but I thought I read that the xperia phone was from 2013. My apologies. Yeah there's no reason that shouldn't run; it looks like AT&T is doing the same whitelisting horseshit as verizon. t-mobile will allow literally anything on their network if it's technically compatible

@djsumdogAs for the longevity bit, I totally feel you. I'm trying my hardest to squeeze 4 years out of my GS20 Ultra.Mostly because I bought it with Bitcoin, in May 2020. So even at today's bargain-basement prices, I paid well over $3,500 for a $1,500 phone. It better fucking last four years; that's still nearly a grand a year.

@r000t Yea, if it was a 4 year old device, I'd have less to complain about for sure. I'd probably be looking at other devices anyway at that point. Still, it's amazing how much removing Google services can breath new life into old phones. I need to reflash my tablet too, which has slowed to a crawl. I'm certain if I remove Gapps from it, it will return to full speed.I remember in 2012 running into someone with an original Edge iPhone; the very first release. He said it only worked on Wi-Fi and could no longer take SIM cards in any country. I was amazed it was still going.

@djsumdog T-Mobile does require VoLTE, as of August 2020 or some such date.I have a Sony Xperia X that I've used with T-Mobile during 2018-2019. Then I went to Canada for a couple of years, came back, and learned that my old phone will not work anymore with T-Mobile. I could get on the network at the store, but they kicked me out later that evening.About their pre-paid plans, the thing you want to look up is "T-Mobile Connect". It is pretty well-hidden in their website.

@sajith You might have missed it in the article, but my phone does support VoLTE and it does work fine with T-Mobile, just not AT&T. It's not that old either. The Xperia 10 is just a little over two years. If it were a four year old device, I think I'd be less pissed off about it.
