@hyde I got a B.A. in Language Studies from the University of California focusing on Japanese. I was pretty happy with it.Admittedly, I graduated in 1999.Also, I began studying Japanese informally in the 1970s.Formal studies began at Monterey Peninsula College circa 1991?Having in person conversational practice, for me, was indispensable. I don't think any apps can replace that.jisho.org is less cumbersome than carrying around dictionaries I suppose? Dunno about their tracking though.

@hyde not exactly alternative, but I settled on AnkiDroid + my own dictionary, which I populate with the words I catch from some context

@hyde My phone has built-in tracking protection and it still works. All the ads disappeared. Of course, you still have your user profile with your learning activities. You might want to look around the web for language-specific learning resources and do it without an app. Find yourself a grammar, a course, a description of the sounds and things to read and listen to (e.g. internet radio). Also, a learner's community.

@hyde this is an interesting question. I love duolingo, mainly because the "funness" of it forces me to stay engaged more. On the other hand, their ads are driving me crazy (forcing you to "restart" the ad, hiding the ad play button in a hidden, hard to see spot), and now that I now their privacy practices suck (yeah, I honestly didn't care to look), I'm second guessing my decision :(

@byterhymer @hyde You're right. In terms of conversation, apps can't replace it.But my God. They absolutely speed up getting to grips with grammar and basic nuance. In 2 months I could read and write cyrillic and have innate senses for basic Ukrainian. And after this, I've no fear of Russian.Apps are undoubtedly a helpful assistant and I'd recommend them to anyone learning a language, but I'd also agree: try and seek out conversation with speakers too. If possible (it's not always).

@hyde Despite of the privacy part, However I have used duolingo a little bit but wanna know your experience, define your experience, how good it is to teach a language without abstraction, I mean not just teaching by heart but actually understanding the language, maybe with the help of one to one mapping with the supporting language. I don't know if I could clearly put my question, please be calm :welp:

@locusfokee I know Serbian, French, English. I did some German when I was kid in school, but not good enough there. I want to learn new, maybe improve German too and see ... The other were quite easy, because of parents, work and life in general.

@hyde lang-8 is the least spammy language resource I know of. Good resource for working on translation skills. Write something in any language you wish and native speakers of that language will mercilessly proofread it. Pay it forward by proofreading stuff in your own language.
