@adam Wish I were electrifying my home but renting complicates that, & local politicians aren't asking for money which I'm pleased about. I use an electric scooter, & sometimes busses or walking, rather than a car. I avoid buying more than I need, & for my work/hobby I strive to make my software performant. But I think there's something vital missing from your poll options...1/2

@adam We've just spent an eye-watering amount on house insulation and heat-recovery ventilation. Last winter was amazingly comfortable, and we're using a small fraction of the energy on heating that we used to use.We use 100% renewable electricity. I want to replace our combustion boiler with a heat exchanger, but I'm worried that the market is too immature and we'll end up with a prototype masquerading as a product. I've no idea how to choose a vendor.

@adam This.. is an intensely 'having money' list. I would not say it's my focus.Grow food and tend gardenEncourage and use local green spacesConsume fewer needless new thingsBuy local and seasonal foodsLive in a building that has low-to-no cooling needsI already don't drive, fly, or own a home hence have any control over its fundamental utilities.

@markusl Impressive! I'm glad to hear the insulation and heat recovery worked out as well as planned. Efficiency improvements are clutch. We got better insulated windows a year or two ago and are in the process of getting geothermal, which will get us off natural gas heat/hot water.

@adam While I certainly want governments to address climate breakdown & do appreciate their support, I reckon it is crucial to organize outside government & business to help others in your local community address their carbon footprints! We can go much further quicker together than we can alone! So at a bare minimum once a month I gather with others to offer my services to attempt to repair whatever (in my case) electronics people bring me! Could be great for many of my followers to do as well!

@alcinnz I am totally stealing this idea and am going to start offering to repair things for my local community!I feel the exact same way about waiting or expecting governments to solve the problem for us. I'm not sure that is a common view though, which was part of the inspiration for the poll. πIt's hard to hit all the points with only 4 options, but I'll try to do better in the future. Maybe something like:- Clean energy- Efficiency gains- Repair/reuse- Simpler life

@adam Please do! And see if you can find others to join you!At the Nelson Repair Cafe we have volunteers reliably showing up focusing on furniture/general (a family friend, infact), electricals (not just me), bikes, & clothing! Tends to be fairly busy too, especially electricals.

@adam We've cut travel to zero, switched over everything to low power/zero power devices to reduce load on grids as things had to be replaced, reduced water consumption to below 40 liters per person per day, switched to entirely local grocers, repaired our stuff rather than replace when possible, switched to renewables when possible (laptops charge via solar), and in general reduced our footprint drastically. It won't make any difference at all. :/

@feonixrift Thanks for the feedback. I will try to do better with future polling options.I'm thinking that specifying categories instead of specific actions would have been better.Glad to hear others have started gardening, either again or for the first time. It's work, but the fresh, local veggies are worth it, IMO.

@adam Oh, that sounds good. When you say "geothermal", is that another term for a ground-source heat pump, or are you lucky enough to live near a hot spring? The word seems to be used both ways.A ground-source heat pump is attractive, but we haven't the space to mount it horizontally, and such a deep hole, so close to the house, makes me nervous.

@markusl Ground source heat pump.We barely have enough room in the yard for vertical loops. The holes are only going to be about 6 inches (15 cm) in diameter and filled in with something that is a good thermal conductor, in case that makes any difference. I'm not sure if your concern is a sinkhole or the drilling equipment accidentally colliding with the house or something else.

@adam I've tried to align my work with alternative energy and electric transit; my past job was with grid-level energy storage, and presently I work with electric vehicle drive trains. At home I (try to) garden, and experiment with off-grid solar power. It's mostly for fun/learning/experimenting/backup, but it works, and among other things charges the laptop I'm typing this on now. I also do some volunteer work with a non-profit that teaches people about wildlife, and of course the effects of climate change.

@adam I've lived a rather intentional lifestyle for such a long time. It's hard to really characterize it as "doing it for climate change." Eat more vegetarian meals in a week, be consciousess about what meats I am eating. Beef has become a quarterly treat, usually sourced locally; prefer wild game. Vegetables I try to keep to whatever is in-season in the valley (Phoenix area). Most of my hobbies and travel are low impact. Camping and hiking. I've really cut back on buying things, and stick with maintaining what I have or thrifting what I need these days.It would be nice to get solar on the cabin. As is, the local grid won't support an electric car. I could do some legal footwork and get the co-op to upgrade the transformers, but I consider it a nice natural cap on how much electrical draw I can get at the cabin. This also limits my ability to electrify it, since diong so would quickly put me over the top. There are certain safety features of being on propane, namely that it works even if the electric goes down. I am somewhat skeptical that the current trend towards replacing gas appliances with electric isn't just green-washing by the appliance companies interested in getting people to replace perfectly fine appliances -- particularly if upstream electric is coal powered. It's one thing to replace an appliance that is end-of-life. There's already sunk CO2 in the manufacture of the device, so tossing one that still has many more years of service on it, might be a net waste.

@adam I do the first two but also:β
Quit my job to work full-time as an environmental activist.Making small personal changes is good, but moral licencing needs to be avoided. That means not losing sight that the real struggle is to stop colonial fossil capitalism from destroying our planet. That can only happen with a system change demanded by political mass movements.

@adam Installed solar panels, using 100% renewable electricity, switched to maximally efficient hybrid car (before electric was viable), traveling less, installed maximally efficient HVAC when old system died, xeriscaped yard, trying to avoid single use plastics, heavy insulation of house (windows, attic).

@adam My concern is the law of unintended consequences. πWhen we had cavity wall insulation installed, AFAICT, the foam found its way into a cracked drain pipe, expanded, and blocked the pipe, causing flooding, subsidence, cracked walls and the like. That kind of experience puts you off anyone who wants to dig a dirty great hole in the ground, right next to the house, and squirt goop into it.

@adam - bicycle and walk as primary mode of transportation. Minimize use of βsmartβ devices in the house. Use physical on-off switches on power strips to turn off devices such as power bricks, tvs and anything with remote controls that merely go in to low power mode rather than turning off.

@adam I eat a lot less meat and dairy. I could eat a pound of broccoli that was shipped from the furthest possible location on earth and it would still be a small fraction of the carbon footprint of a pound of beef.
