@mgrondin @thebiologist1117 @straw ooo camera thread?I usually use an Olympus om2 with a 50mm. But also have a Minolta himatic af2 that I carry around a bunch. Then a few others like a Kiev 4 that I cleaned up a while back. Plus a rebel eos xs, Kiev 30, some old Pentax sp and spotmatic with a number of macro lenses. Mostly I just use the 1st three though.Currently shooting arista edu 200, ilford hp5 and cinestill 400d.

@straw @thebiologist1117 @mgrondin oh there's nothing wrong with digital. I have a Rebel t3i from years back. I use it to "scan" negatives often. I also use lento, and android camera app that simulates film, quite a bit when I'm messing around or don't have another camera with me. For some reason I just think film is fun, I even develop at home. I haven't printed yet but have the equipment now.

@enot @thebiologist1117 @mgrondin I really like how 80's and a lot of 90's movies look, I'm not sure why post-2000 movies look so different... something about the lighting/lens/lighting.

@straw @thebiologist1117 @mgrondin people often think digital is cheating and using software after even more so. But the stuff you can get up to in a darkroom works out to about the same. Totally different images than what is in one negative.

@enot how is 400d? I'm still waiting for my 2 preorder rolls to ship/come in.I've not yet settled on solid favs. I lean toward Kodak Gold 200 for color(wish I could get it in 36) and HP5 for B&W but I'm really loving Kentmere Pan 100 and I'm still trying other B&W films. Just shot a roll of BwXX so excited to see those results. Have a roll of Tmax 100 I'm thinking of shooting next.I've shot allot of Superia X-tra 400 as well but I find the color balance is not always great and leans more towards the greens which I don't care for.I've also shot some rolls of Ektar 100 and love it but it's too expensive to make ity primary film. @thebiologist1117 @straw

@enot @thebiologist1117 @mgrondin American Psycho was shot on film but it captures that look, it really feels like a movie out of the 1980's, not 1999, and I think it fits it quite well as it is set in that time. and modern movies shot on film also have a different look than older ones...

@mgrondin @thebiologist1117 @straw I have to finish the roll and get it developed still. I only got a couple backer rolls. I would dev at home but color chemicals are more of a pain, they typically all get mixed and you have to use them quick. Not like b/w where the concentrate keeps for a long time.

@mgrondin @enot @thebiologist1117 a show that really captured the look of 1980's cinema is Stranger Things, at least in the earlier seasons. it looks very modern in season 3 and 4 though

@enot @straw @thebiologist1117 There is for sure nothing wrong with digital. And for sure most of the time digital will produce better, sharper, higher resolution images than what you get with most 35mm film(Ektar is really sharp and the gap closes when you get into medium and large format film but still)For me it's about the full experience of film. It's physical. Loading the film. Advancing it after every shot. Then there is the fact that it's an actual chemical reaction happening in your hands as the light touches the films emulsion layers. That then gets locked in by a second chemical reaction/process and you end up with what the film captured. Which may or may not be the same as what your eyes where seeing based on light conditions and camera settings.I prefer to leave mine untouched(i realize that the lab does some color corrections and such when they scan the negs) just because it feels more pure. And in general I'm ok with some modifications/edits after the fact but sometimes people go to far with it. Adding and removing things...for me at least right now photography is about capturing things in the moment. If I don't want that pole or garbage can or whatever in my shot then I better make sure it's not there when I take it. If it can't be avoided then it becomes part of the moment.

@mgrondin @thebiologist1117 @straw it certainly depends on the goal. Documentary style, street etc, minimal editing. Maybe making sure the contrast and exposure are what you envisioned. But for the "fine art" side, anything goes. Multiple exposures on one print, mixing media, plenty of dodging and burning. Maybe a different chemical wash to change the tone. All that is what makes photography interesting for me, everyone has a different approach and goal. There are so many styles. So much inspiration.

@mgrondin @thebiologist1117 @straw every time I tell someone how film works or how color film works differently they either look at me weird or tell me I should teach a class.Or like how color filters affect black and white film. Its a very broad and interesting hobby.Let's not start on homemade developers etc 🤓
