@ninapaley @ninafromcanadaeh It's one of those sites that forgot about the "reader view" option, (please don't tell them)'The Outsiders' author S.E. Hinton is in hot water with gay-rights supporters - Los Angeles TimesMichael Schaub3 minutesWriter S.E. Hinton drew fire from readers on Twitter after she denied that two of the characters in her classic young adult novel “The Outsiders” were gay.The flap started on Monday after Hinton responded to a tweet from a reader asking whether there were “any romantic feelings” between the characters Johnny and Dallas, two members of the Greasers gang.“No. Where is the text backing this?” Hinton replied. Hinton, who wrote “The Outsiders” when she was in high school — it was published in 1967 — has continued to write novels for young adults and has more than 40,000 Twitter followers. After the reader replied he thought a relationship between the two teenagers would be “cute,” Hinton tweeted, “ask someone in the ’60’s how ‘cute’ it was to be gay. I have many friends I love & do not want to sleep with.”“The Outsiders” tells the story of two competing youth gangs in Tulsa, Okla.: the Greasers and the Socs, whose rivalry turns deadly. Penguin recently released a special edition of the book in anticipation of its 50th anniversary next year. The novel inspired a 1983 film adaptation directed by Francis Ford Coppola. It starred a host of emerging young actors, including Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze, Diane Lane, Emilio Estevez, C. Thomas Howell, Ralph Macchio (as Johnny) and Matt Dillon (as Dallas). On Twitter, Hinton doubled down on her assertion that the characters weren’t gay, writing, “I have no problem with anyone being gay. Long time supporter of LGBT rights. ... No, they are not gay. I wrote them, I ought to know.”One reader called Hinton’s responses “trash,” writing, “Why would you reject young gay kids interpreting your characters in a way that makes them feel safe?”“Young gay kids can identify with the book without me saying the characters are gay,” Hinton replied. “I never ever set out to make anyone feel safe.”Hinton spent much of Monday responding to readers who were upset with her tweets, reiterating that the characters were straight and denying that she harbored homophobic feelings. She told one Twitter user who had suggested she apologize, “I said I did not write the characters that way. I apologize for nothing.”

@ObligateSpinster @Hollahollara @ninafromcanadaeh Ew. I don’t cuddle with friends. That’s just too close for comfort. This one girl/woman who draws a fairly succesfull webcomic had a storyline in her sidecomic where a character was “biromantic”. Meaning she liked doing romantic things like holding hands while walking in the rain, or cuddling on the sofa, with both men and women. But was a heterosexual, so didn’t want to have sex with women. To me it sounded like a very weird thing to be. And in hindsight, a tad selfish/exploitative.

@ObligateSpinster @Hollahollara @ninafromcanadaeh Ok, that’s interesting (I’m all about data points). Here’s my data point, in case anyone is interested. I will hug a friend if we haven’t seen each other in a long time, but in everyday life I would only touch a friend if there was a specific reason. Like I needed to get their attention in a noisy environment, I had to stop them from stepping in front of a bicycle or I needed to demonstrate something, etc. And that applies both to men and women.

@starsstorm @ObligateSpinster @Hollahollara @ninafromcanadaeh Is that a modern phenomenon? I was not a chronically online teen, nor did I ever think about the sexual orientations of fictional characters in YA novels. I also wasn't assigned The Outsiders for English class (I had to read Lord Of The Flies.... And I didn't imagine any homoeroticism in that either 🤣). What purpose could that serve, to imagine all fictional men are gay men, other than to make the female reader feel a bit safe? But he's fictional, so he's already as safe as a man can get. So why bother? And if it's a thing an individual reader wants to do, she can just imagine it is so - and not yell at the author for it not being what the author actually wrote.

@Kay @ObligateSpinster @Hollahollara @ninafromcanadaeh I’m not sure how modern it is, but it definitely continues to get worse. I’d say it started in the 60s with female Star Trek fans and their obsession with Kirk/Spock. The Sherlock and Harry Potter fandoms are definitely the worst with this concept that I’ve run into. I’ve been active in fanfiction circles for 20 years and it gets so much worse every year.

@Gnomeshatecheese @ObligateSpinster @Hollahollara @ninafromcanadaeh The first time I saw "queerplatonic" was in asexual circles. It was their relationship holy grail. From what I gathered, it is supposed to be a non-sexual life-partner situation. They live together, maybe cuddle, kiss, and do other "romantic" things if they want, but have no sexual contact (unless they're the "have sex without sexual attraction" asexuals🙄).If they are in love but don't have sex, that makes it qu**r because not wanting sex most or all of the time makes you special. If they're just extremely close friends and well-matched roommates, it is qu**r because not like other friendships. Normal friends could NEVER EVER be mistaken for romantic partners, right?

@polarisera @ninafromcanadaeh The wild thing about Luca is that the writer/director described it as being a time in childhood that is "pre-romance". He never said that people couldn't interpret the characters as LGB, just that no romantic or sexual component to their relationships was intended (because they are KIDS). Still got raked over the coals by internet people.Plus he based the two lead boys off of himself and a real friend who is still JUST A FRIEND. Imagine being an adult on the receiving end of creepy fanart/commentaries about what is basically yourself AS A CHILD.

@SandyD @starsstorm @ObligateSpinster @Hollahollara @ninafromcanadaeh Lived in a gay male building in Hollywood for a decade and a half. There were ActUp signs in the corner of the parking garage, and sometimes they asked me for some professional advice, but outside of understanding the basics of how the disease progressed, they demanded nothing of me.They were nice, gossipy, critical, helpful, pathetic, lonely, social, useless, useful, self absorbed , empathetic… you know, people. What they were not: women. Nor did they understand women’s issues any more than the average het man. They just weren’t out to scam women as sexual prey, and that was nice.

@jmakesart @sunspot @feerique @Hollahollara @ObligateSpinster You know, I have little use for what normally passes for “romantic”, and when single, I’m quite happy to have sex without a significant emotional connection. But I would never claim that to be an orientation, and slapping a “queer” label on it would be doubly silly. I just happen to be relatively emotionally aloof/cold compared to many other people. @starsstorm @Kay @ObligateSpinster @Hollahollara @ninafromcanadaeh That reminds me. I had a friend in my thirties whom I spent a lot of time with, and she was once telling me about this very pornographic story she’d read about Holmes and Watson. I think a subset of the audience for this sort of stuff isn’t really into it as sexual material, but like it because they find it funny. However, I suspect these people don’t actually produce any of this stuff themselves.

@Hollahollara @Gnomeshatecheese @Kay @ObligateSpinster @ninafromcanadaeh I mean it shouldn’t be. I’ve had to start avoiding most fandom stuff because it’s just not fun since it’s all sex and gender nonsense all the time. I remember having really great discussions of the political motivations of different characters in Harry Potter and Star Trek (especially Dukat in Star Trek DS9). Now the gender specials have wrecked that because they’re obsessed with Dax being ‘trans’ because of the symbiont stuff in the Trill culture. There’s a couple of fantasy book fandoms I’m in where sex isn’t really a problem, but there also isn’t fanfiction about them really and the primary active fans are women in their 30s and 40s. The authors are also normal, average looking older women, which I have a suspicion is part of why there isn’t really any ridiculous fandom sex worship going on.
