I don't actually know #Lua and I don't even care to learn it... I just copy-pasted a bunch of stuff from GitHub and tweak it until it works... I guess that makes me a Lua Copilot? 😄

@codewiz No it doesn't.To patch together code is the basics of programming. If you respect the licenses where you took them from, you'd be doing it in the most correct form possible. But, if you copied everyone's Lua code without consent and stated suggesting pieces of it to people, with no way for them to retrieve the respective licenses, while moving to comercialize your approach and destroy the Lua community at the same time, you'd be on your way to being a Lua Copilot®.

@pj It's #Wezterm with a single horizontal split. Vim has a vsplit. I themed the split bars of both programs to look almost identical (with a subtle green accent in vim).I tried using the #neovim embedded terminal, but ironically I can't get used to vim-style editing while using a terminal 😂

@olamundo I'm hearing this a lot, but I'm skeptical that #GitHub's legal department wouldn't have thought about license compliance. Surely they will ingest only permissively-licensed code with no complications (attribution clauses, patent clauses...)Do we have hard evidence of actual copyright infringement that would get them in trouble?I mostly host on #GitLab, but I'd be happy to clone all my GPLv3 projects to GitHub if it helps get Microsoft sued 😃

@codewiz I don't think getting Microsoft sued does any harm to them.In the end, throwing yourself in the front of a moving SUV to get the driver sued won't do much to the petroil industry.Microsoft has publicly started conflicts they knew they'd lose the battle, but win the war. i.e. the browser wars.As long as Big Tech only gets wrist slaps as fines and continue to dictate the regulations/laws in the Information Era, nothing will be changed.I call for a complete and total boycott of Microsoft, as well as grassroot awareness movements to get people out of it.In the end of the day, we don't need them, but they need us.

@hrcerq @olamundo Ok, but before we start fighting and boycotting, could we at least gather evidence of wrongdoing?Assuming that they'll do evil without being able to prove it later will make us look like SCO accusing Linux of copying their OS without being able to point at any specific piece of code in court 🤡

@codewiz @hrcerq "Microsoft ❤️ Linux"Then moving for Lenovo to emprision users in their shitty OS is wrongdoing.I really don't want to start listing, as it is a long history of wrongdoings which I am sure you are aware yourself. You keep bringing it to court, but the problem with courts is that they analyze a case alone in the vacuum, not a systemic parasidic structure.

@olamundo @hrcerq To be extra clear: I have no sympathy for Microsoft and I'm not trying to defend them. I even maintained a Microsoft hate page listing all their misdoings, along with some links to sources. All I'm saying is that we should find real evidence to back all our accusations. Or else, they'll simply take the weakest claim and use it to show that we're a bunch of crazy Microsoft haters. How do I know? A few years ago, a good friend did *exactly* this with my list! Hello, @mako 👋

@codewiz @hrcerq @mako I know that you are not an M$ fanboy, or supporter in any way and I am writing you based on that knowledge.Still, their behaviour is clearly that of a parasite.Like I said, we don't need them, but they couldn't function without #FLOSS .I can't find the legal apparathus to get them incriminated for their actions with Copilote, but I am saying exacly that we know they are parasites working against the interests of all devs, all users, and even the planet, considering how they make machines obsolete.( #UpCycleWin7 )Fines won't do them damage. We should cut them down and burn the stem.

Again I agree. I still believe paying attention to legal aspects is important, but even more, we must pay attention to moral aspects. It is crystal clear that they're acting as parasites, using code without the knowledge/consent of its authors to create their own products or improve existing ones.

@hrcerq @olamundo The most helpful contributions are well-researched arguments written in a neutral language, like mjg59's post on the Lenovo / Microsoft UEFI policy change:https://mjg59.dreamwidth.org/60248.htmlAsking Microsoft to clarify their motivations forces them to come up with a plausible public response OR look so guilty that there's nothing they could possibly add in their defense.

Not really sure, but I'll bet they have more lawyers than programmers nowadays...And beyond the copilot thing, having a single centralized and closed-source based infrastructure for all floss projects is a big flaw[1].[1] https://drewdevault.com/2022/03/29/free-software-free-infrastructure.html

@hrcerq @olamundo @mako Agreed. That's why we should be moving to #GitLab and possibly self-host instances, as many large open source projects have already been doing (#KDE, #GNOME, #FreeDesktop and #Debian).

@codewizWouldnt the wise move be towards code forges that federate rather than another centralised platform. Even if its open source & you run your own server, you are stuck in a kind of silo. The state of federated forges -https://toot.cat/@idlestate/108567064715098668https://toot.cat/@idlestate/108567064715098668 @hrcerq @olamundo @mako
