@Reno depends. I created my very first account in late 2017 or early 2018. I felt i couldnt get any traction and left. Then when i decided i had enough of big social in 2019 i came back. I seem to do that with new tech. I dismiss it at first or dont see the utility. Then i come back to it and get the lightbulb moment.

@john @Reno Sure, the idea is to just minimise the impact, not eliminate it altogether - my first account's instance no longer exists, for example, so unless you get lucky with caches, it's impossible to pull my true join date.But you can get close enough by just walking a bot across my accounts. Actually, I think this is my oldest surviving account now, but at least you can avoid recording multiple entries for me.If someone wants to hide the associations, well yeah, you basically need human eyes on it. But it's just as difficult to stop someone voting twice in the poll.

I got a Mastodon account for the first time sometime in like late 2015 early 2016, but basically abandoned it because I didn't really find any community I easily fit into, and then never looked back. Perhaps a lot of them are more involved with things in real time, and space? Social networks can be a real time sink. - But they can also be a person's window to the world of other humans. When I was on the road, you (and others) were consistent people to interact with. There is a lot of VALUE to that.

@Reno I first joined Indenti.ca in like 2010. I tried using it, and a number of other Pump.io & StatusNet instances on and off for a while, but I don't think I ever really "got it" and freedom denying proprietary corporate social media, particularly Facebook, continued to be my primary online location, up until I gave it up for #lent this year and decided I was going to dive full into #GnuSocial. I finally understood how federation actually worked so here i am in #OrdinaryTime #worksLikeEmail

@phoenix @Reno I did make a GNU Social account way back to check out what it was, but never really used it.I was on Twitter, but in 2017 they suspended my whole account for a week, simply because I made a tweet containing the word "fuck", which was the final straw that made me jump ship immediately

@quad @Reno yeah I think that was around the time I had gotten my second suspension due apparently tripping some invisible spam filter (support would unban me every time I emailed them and never did end up telling me the actual reason)I was actually following you on twitter at the time so once I saw you jump ship I did the same

@phoenix @Reno I'm always surprised how many people on here recognize me from Twitter.I've always had the automated suspensions, where you sign in and it gives you some ridiculous page telling you "please delete these tweets". And then afterwards it tells you if you can start using the account again immediately or you have to wait a while.

This does not have an option for between 1-2 years. I set up this friendica node (friendica.eskimo.com) in November of 2020 after being kicked off of CIAbook for wrong think.
