       The neopagan thread on KF reminds me why I don't have an account. Why bother when some kind soul does the work for me? The "muh culchurul appropreeashun" is especially delicious from an art history perspective and, as has already been pointed out, neopaganism is cultural appropriation elevated to cult status unless your Lord & Lady are Twitter & TikTok and you renamed "sabbats" to "My LARPing & Cosplay Sessions".

       But yeah. When I was taking a throwaway course on "Tourist Art" (which turned out to be surprisingly interesting, won't lie) one of the themes that came up was how indigenous groups specifically sell "cultural art" to tourists to make some money. A lot of Navajo artists make permanent sand paintings with some of the symbols altered so that they're allowed to sell them without violating taboos, and there was a video which featured an African wood carver (can't remember the actual country off-hand) who made statues to sell fancy "gallery" tourist shops. It didn't bother him at all since he was Muslim and even admitted he'd never have pagan idolatry in his own home. Yet you know some pasty larval-form Karen "eclectic witch" would be freaking out if one of her peers was using them in a ritual, never you mind that the only ones who would be affected by it converted to Islam centuries ago, made them *specifically* to sell to white Karens, and could not possibly give less of a shit what you do with it once you give them their money.
