Three months into being a new father and one area I find myself being overprotective is screen exposure..I know it’s silly but I still try and shield her from looking at our phones or the TV..in the spirit of the negative effects of overprotection I know I can’t hide tech from her so my thought is to just focus on teaching her how things work, how to use them to be creative and the negative effects they have on society..am I heading in the right direction?

You're on the right track. I just visited with my 10yo niece in Phoenix and she is completely glued to her smart phone. Would not even put it down when asked. I set strict limits on my son's use of his tablet and he can get a smart phone when he's old enough to move out as far as I'm concerned.

@mrmcmayhem @Mesooohahny That's a really good idea. Yea, electronic devices are cancer today. I'm glad I didn't grow up in the cellphone era. When I was in high school, the first cellphones bricks were finally becoming small and affordable. If one went off in class, it'd get taken up.I like that scene in Paper Planes where that Aussie teacher makes all the students put phones in the hat before class starts.

@Mesooohahny Definitely the right choice to make! It breaks my heart to see little kids so attached to screens. The two year old I look after is constantly asking to watch youtube - and gets her way far too often. It's not a healthy habit to start at such a young age.

@Mesooohahny we started out like this, our kids do watch TV, but only on the one TV we have that’s in the living room, but they do not (and will not) have tablets or phones of their own for as long as possible (they are 2 and 3 now… so still a long way to go). We recently allowed some YouTube and have now said no more to that because it’s a black hole of who knows what and crazy ads on kids content.

@Mesooohahny My oldest didn't get any screen time at all until after she was one...when we had our second daughter. Then, the screen became a necessary evil in certain instances. We limit it severely - both timing and options. As @Evenkeeld said, these are tools. If you're training them the "right" way otherwise, they'll be better at self-regulation regardless. If you also teach them (later, don't ruin them too young) about entrainment and propaganda, they'll reject it on their own.

@1over7 @Mesooohahny mine is 11. We hard limit time on apps no exception during school weeks. As for streaming TV, if the show is vetted by us we are fine with scripted shows. YT style content is mostly forbidden (HIIII GUYSSS). The real issue is other children that have tiktok etc and emulate what they see. It's a never ending flow of bullshit.

@Mesooohahny I would add, she's just as likely to be harmed by your overuse of those things. I had a rule with my kids: if someone talks to me, the phone gets put away or I turn completely away from the computer. With screens it's easy to become as inattentive and self-absorbed as it is with drugs or alcohol. Never give the kids the impression that they are less important to you than your brain-melting time. 🙂

@1over7 @Mesooohahny yeah seemed like all of them got a phone at 4th-5th grade. Part of it makes sense with all the extra curricular stuff being all over town. You can tell the unattended ones from those with parents in their grills though.

@Mesooohahny our girls. Now 8 and 5 (no tablet until almost 3 for older and younger was much sooner for screens). We noticed the biggest difference is finding their interest when they get old enough and encouraging them. Our oldest loves crafts so she watches only crafting videos and our youngest is athletic so she likes ninja stuff. I believe Montessori school is the big difference. Spend time doing what they like with them and they won't want a screen. ImoGL. They are all different people

@scottmitchellrose @Mesooohahny Scott, it's time to do the right thing. Do not value your comfort with your children and a lack of confrontation more than you value their long-term health. Kids can't have phones if you say no.

@Mesooohahny Definitely avoid using screens as a pacifier if you can help it. I see way too many parents who use phones/tablets as an electronic babysitter. When she's older, consider getting her into understanding computers by setting up a Raspberry Pi together, but you've got a few years before you think about that much.

@Mesooohahny I meant cartoon network at the end there. Through the cartoon years, the kids had their dvds and we used Tivo. it had a fantastic feature called the kid zone that let me lock out live TV and only have approved shows available. It also has commercial skip! Today I'd just set up Plex and torrent the shows I deem acceptable.

@Mesooohahny Jimmy neutron & cyberchase where great. Clifford. Dragon tails. Max and Ruby was ok. Spongebob seasons 1-5 were the sketchiest that we had. 60s Scooby Doo if you can find them. The Batman was excellent too. Batman v. Dracula movie is actually my favorite Batman episode ever. Teen titans go seemed ok. But they were rolling off at that point.

@Mesooohahny no cell phone until summer after 8th grade! Good luck with that tho... That one was tough 5 years ago. I did successfully ban GTA from the house until the point where it wasnt obsessed over and wasn't a big deal. That one was a multi engagement campaign over many formative years. Girl won't want that one tho. Devices/computers only in the communal areas until h.s. Nintendo over ANY MSFT/Sony product until h.s.
