@selea SMTP is a legacy protocol anyway. It’s better to use Signal, which was built for E2EE. (Or Matrix, but Signal is better.)

@selea this sounds more like different interpretations of the word private. Often private is thought as a synonym to personal which a gmail address is

@selea just as with everything involving communication all it depends on is where you draw the line on who and what to trust. If it's Gmail they probably on some level trust Google with their data.Even if you host your own server you need to have trust in some other entities for it to work.

@gustav Or the simple fact that people does not know what google does in your inbox. They have not just given it any thought.

@selea that is highly likely indeed. I just don't think that questioning and making fun of those users is very productive. The best that can be done is making sure better alternatives exist and are available and then be ready for when those users eventually become ready for a change, maybe because of something Google did or some other reason.

@gustav The sad part is that people are so used to "free stuff" now, so they are unlikely to pay a couple of dollars each month to get an account somewhere else.So for now, explaining the issue is what I personally can do, if someone ask.

@selea yeah, for subscription services to be valued the alternative must seem worse first. This happens frequently on an individual basis such as users Google account getting closed without a disclosed reason but en mass it rarely happens. Not even Snowden did much a dent

@selea When it comes to UI and UX, yes. But we can still compare the security and privacy aspects of these two kinds of systems.
