This is the kind of thing I worry about when it comes to our modern technology. BMW charging a monthly fee to use a feature in the car you've "purchased". #BMW doesn't need to do anything to make this work. You already have everything you need to have the feature. It's just you need to be paying the fee for BMW to LET you use a feature in your own car. The subscription economy is out of hand.https://www.motor1.com/news/597376/bmw-heated-seats-subscription/

@mike Subscriptions is becoming the norm and actually owning anything is becoming less important. But this is odd to charge for a feature. I would buy something else.

@DarkWraithLord I can understand subscriptions where continued labor is required for the product. Software or news are good examples. Updates are required so even after a purchase is made more work is being done. Heated seats though? Big no there. It's whether they're on or off. Maybe a temperature adjustment. No one is playing Doom on their seat. This is a horrible idea. I fully agree. Buy something else.

@mike It's a very old game from IBM's playbook. They realized (around the 80s, maybe?) that it was cheaper to ship a single SKU of mainframe and then let the customer pay for upgrades which consisted of the IBM tech punching some hardware key codes into the console than have various SKUs with various hardware configurations. But making it a subscription is a new level of fsckery. I hope someone drives a sedan through their bloody front window.

@mike yeah that's concerning. The subscription model gets more popular everyday (Spotify, Netflix, etc.) and it's slowly invading everything, just as this example illustrates.

@adamsdesk They still do subscriptions for some things in the Toyota. There's the obvious like Internet and SiriusXM, but there's stuff like remote start and door lock too. Nothing as lame as heated seats though. Everything Toyota charges for is "remote" as far as I know. I have no idea how you'd use heated seats remotely.

@mike yeah unfortunately that's where things are going, Tesla is also using a subscription model for self-driving features, but that one is a bit more justifiable since the AI model is a software and so on, but charge for a heated seat is a pure greed.

@mike I couldn't agree more! Is everything has to become a subscription? Soon people will be forced to pay 1K$ a month tu use their technology. At the price they sell the car it should be part of the deal. I hate this subscription model. I get it for music and tv or stuff that makes sense but now it's everywhere. That's why I try to use FOSS as much as possible. I'd rather make a generous donation to a good project instead of a stupid subscription for something I already paid for.

@mike sadly they aren't the first to have this horrible idea. Toyota charges a small fee (after 3 years of ownership) for remote start on their vehicles. Now, I can understand IF the service requires the App/internet access (and they don't additionally charge me for internet connectivity), but yeah heated seats. No EFFING way!!

@mike Outrageous. 10 years ago tethering your PC to your phone became an added subscription. I was furious because I already paid them for that cell data and had the soft and hard capability to use the feature. This is another step off the ledge.

Ahhh, the joys of remote work :DMore helpfully, if you can't run 26 miles each way to work, you clearly don't care enough about your job.a REAL capitalist would not only run 52 miles a day for their job, they'd figure out how to turn that into a successful business venture!aTo clarify, when I said "helpful," I meant that it might help you smile, not with the transportation :)

@mike#Bosch have a "premium" feature on some of their e-bike motors where you pay to lock the display to the controller so the motor can only be operated by the owner's display. It's a one off modest fee but it should be enabled by default.

@mike The trend is getting worse. According to The Register, some customers of Sage, the accounting software company, are complaining they are being forced to a new subscription-based model even though they have already purchased perpetual licensing.

@andrewski @mike Apparently phones can no longer be mounted as USB storage on PCs?Actually just looked it up and phones now (abstract storage out through something called MTP](https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=240347) so phone drones have even less ability to understand their device.

@wrongthink @andrewski @mike Mounting as USB storage is simply not feasible today due to an actual user storage filesystem not being stored on a single unencrypted block device anymore. MTP sucks, yes, so I prefer to use rsync and SFTP/sshfs either over wifi or through ADB port forwarding over the cable.
