Microsoft has asked Lenovo to make it harder to boot Linux on their computers.obviously I know some really cool people who work at Microsoft but it's very funny to me that people have been harping on us FOSS types for not instantly forgiving them for 20 years of malice, and now we've got this. [1]when Microsoft is asking manufacturers to prevent people from booting other OSes and not communicating as to why, they are positioning themselves as the enemy. it's that simple. if they want to be trusted by Linux users, they need to earn that trust.we're about 2y away, by my estimation, from living in a bizarro world where x86 PCs are less open to free desktops than ARM Macs.1: https://mjg59.dreamwidth.org/60248.html

@AgathaSorceress it's a gaslighting tactic in the true original use of the term. we who were harmed, or remember our predecessors being harmed, are essentially being told that we're imagining things, while the people who harmed us are able to benefit from our work without consequences

@tindall @AgathaSorceress Like - hmm, I wonder. This company that wrote a fuckload of memos in the late 90s about how they were going to lose to open source and linux in general, a company has a history of doing FUD and if that fails, EEE. Has stopped doing FUD, and is suddenly embracing open source software and linux? hmmmmm. hmmm I wonder what is going on heree

@tindall Because Microshaft never supported free software, they only support the open source aspect of it (so excluding the entire ethical part).Plus Microshaft has a massive track record of doing based things, only to then sink a knife in your back the moment they got enough customers on their side.

@tindall there's layers and layers to mandatory secure boot. It makes it harder for platforms even smaller than Linux to survive, it makes it harder to experiment with new ideas with OS development as a hobby, it encourages further e-waste by running the software obsolescence treadmill even faster, it locks people in to specific bootloader ecosystems which can be exploited by hostile parties. And so on.

@xianc78 @tindall When decent RISC-V laptops/SOCs start coming out. I assume Framework will be the first to release a RISC-V board, and once that happens the perception will (hopefully) change to having a proper RISC-V platform to build upon which in turn will encourage more SOCs and boards to be produced.

@tindall It's also comical that anyone could even defend MS for things like this at all. What possible legitimate reason could they have for this? It's just straight up anti-competitiveness. Not to mention how pathetic it makes them look considering they feel the need to do things like this even when linux desktop marketshare is so tiny.

For me, MS is far beyond salvaging. They are like Bayer-Monsanto, Nestlé, the kind of evil corps that are so morally wrecked that there is no shred of hope in winning respect from ethical consumers. So for me, MS cutting a sneaky deal with #Lenovo changes nothing w/my boycott, and if MS were to retract the swindle I would still continue boycotting MS either way.

The only thing that changes as far as I’m concerned is that #Lenovo is now firmly on my #boycott list as well. The only Lenovo hardware I will acquire from here forward is h/w that I pull out of a dumpster (which neither supports the 1st hand market nor the 2nd hand market).

Can you be more hyperbolic? From the 3rd paragraph in the linked blog post in your original post:“Secured-core” is a term used to describe machines that meet a certain set of Microsoft requirements around firmware security, and by and large it’s a good thing - devices that meet these requirements are resilient against a whole bunch of potential attacks in the early boot process. 🥱

@tindall harder? You just have to enable third party boot keys. Those lenovo laptops even have an option to ship with fedora or Ubuntu. I dont see this making installing Linux any harder as many people who install Linux already disable secure boot.

@tindall its right in the firmware setup next to the secure boot settings. If you got a new laptop would you not be customizing other uefi settings as well? I am no fan of more MS crap baked into firmware, but this seems to be a lot of outrage over very small issues. If you're really concerned over stuff like this then stick with open hardware/firmware. Has anyone bought this thinkpad with the preinstalled Linux option? Does it ship with third party keys/secure boot enabled?

@AgathaSorceress Of course m$ loves "open source" and Linux - as the GNU/Linux OS helps prop up their absolute garbage heap of an OS.Then they ensure to call it just "Linux" and "open source", m$ makes people think of the "just for fun" ideals, rather than realise that it's free software and the OS was written so that the users could have freedom.

@wcasanova no shit, Sherlock. I direct you to this HN comment: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32067586"The worst problem is that people are (even in the other discussion thread here on HN) still claiming that we are scaremongering. Back when all this Secure Boot was announced, we already said that its main purpose seemed to be to make booting of non-MS operating systems more complicated, rather than security enforcement."But, you're scaremongering! See, I put this Debian USB pendrive and I can still boot it fine!"This was because Debian (and many other distros) went, at some point, through MS-enforced hoops in order to get their bootloader signed. Quite a perilous situation in which MS was this "steward" of the entire PC OS ecosystem; whether a Linux distribution booted or not on PCs was practically at the whim of MS. That was at least better than the alternative (no booting -- since MS got away with SecureBoot anyway) and we have to thank people like mjg59 for it."

@tindall @elmiko It already worked! MS is far from being a friend of free software, but MS we have today is a shadow of its former self. I remember the days when there was no Purism, no System 76, no linux support for most hardware — chances were good that even your wired network adapter won't work. And MS could shove just about anything down your throat. It's not like that anymore. As average Joe moves to mobile MS is close to being irrelevant.

@tindall @elmiko And MS doesn't feed on support from governments and enterprises, MS exists off your money. Not directly, but still. So that is how it would work — buy a computer that comes with linux. Tell the market what you want instead of adapting to it yourself by buying a system designed for Windows and installing Linux on it. Capitalism kinda works in this case. Even HP has models like Dev One which comes with Linux — looks like a decent piece of hardware to me 🤷

@tindall It's less about forgiving them and more about that some "FOSS types" are very quick to yell a conspiracy behind everything.Crying wolf isn't a good thing if you want your voice to be heard when it counts.Like this one here. This is a very obvious attack and needs to be stomped out at its core. It was already completely unacceptable that Microsoft was given the keys to the castle to begin with with Secure Boot.
