I generally avoid those kinds of assessments. It is interesting to me though that Stolypin, who wanted twenty years of peace, was assassinated as things were heating up in Europe and that Rasputin, whose closeness with the tsar and tsarina made him the most prominent and viable opponent to the war party, had his reputation luridly dragged through the mud, had multiple assassination attempts until one succeeded, and had his prominence in the pre-revolutionary days downplayed as a mere historical curiosity or upgraded to a literal cartoon villain by liberal history. This doesn’t make Rasputin “good”. Some things alleged about him may have been true. But McMeekin makes a good case that there’s a reason this guy was targeted.RT: https://poa.st/objects/21492213-5f5d-4548-8ab4-81d39ae9435e

@AnimeTradCath I’m not a Romanov revisionist. Nicholas II was the wrong man for the wrong time. He probably was the gentle soul in his private life that he was depicted as and what was done to him and his family was beyond the pale, but post 1905 he wasn’t the ruler Russia needed. It’s a complicated subject though as even though Stolypin probably could have saved the empire some of his reforms were probably going to create more problems for the empire (like his push for minority rights, especially jewish emancipation from the Pale). The main takeaway is that capable, dissenting voices were removed from the board.

@borzoi @AnimeTradCath It's a lot like Marie Antoinette. Has she been slandered by the mainstream historical record? Yes. Does that mean she wasn't incompetent and meddling in affairs that she really shouldn't have? No.

@borzoi So a fair assessment is that a lot of what is told about Rasputin was just either outright lies or exaggerations to his character?

@borzoi @AnimeTradCath I do feel confident in calling him a good man. He inspired many peasants with a reinvigorated prayer life. He may be thought of as an artist and his medium was prayer. It is clear that God found great favor in the man for one reason or another, and to me that is enough to regard him as a good person. I will absolutely ask for his intercession if I or anyone I know is suffering from a hemorrhage.

@AnimeTradCath He wasn’t totally incompetent either. despite the bad start his reign got off to there was basically ten years of relative peace and development, but the wheels started to come off after the war with the Japanese and the first revolution. But he never got the lessons he needed on being a ruler from his father due to his untimely demise. It’s funny as Wilhelm II, Nicholas’ cousin, had similar issues and the two of them tried to personally prevent the war during the July Crisis by talking to each other, but neither of them really had the force of will to buck their own war parties. It’s sad looking back on it all because so much of what happened actually was preventable but there were stronger historical forces and factions conspiring against them.

@AnimeTradCath Or even if true just played up to disguise the real motives. Make a smokescreen about how scandalous the Rasputin orgies are as your real aim to remove an anti-war voice in the tsar’s ear. You have to understand that Great War was preventable and peace could have come sooner. Nicholas and Wilhelm, addressing each other as cousins, tried to squash it. And coincidentally Rasputin was hospitalized by an assassination attempt during the July Crisis. this was the height of Rasputin’s influence on the family from how he helped their son. If Rasputin hadn’t been removed from the board he probably would have insisted that Nicholas buck the war party and work the situation out with his cousin. Instead Nicholas got manipulated when he was still trying to stop the mobilization

@AnimeTradCath Nicholas was a soft man who could be cajoled, manipulated, and bullied. The people who could do this to him didn’t like that an anti-war peasant could also have this influence on him, especially one that had solidified that trust through helping Alexei’s hemophilia

@borzoi @AnimeTradCath It seems to be a constant in anti-monarchist revolutions that they remove the King that is the most reformist and genuinely concerned with the well being of the common people, because those are the ones who hesitate to use brutality early on.Louis XVI and Nicolas II were not killed because they were bad kings, but because they were fundamentally good people in a political context that rewarded sociopaths.A lesson that was well learned by modern regimes, where antisocial attitudes are embedded in the very organization of the state so that the survival of the regime does not depend on a single man being an asshole. As much as I would like to go back to non-sociopathic rulership, I’m afraid this ship has sailed, there never will be a Louis IX reign again.

@borzoi @MyLittleFashy @AnimeTradCath Germanic people have our own far older caste system, the Rígsþula, which decides caste upon physiognomy. The blonder and more blue eyed you are, the higher your caste, the darker you are, the lower. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/R%C3%ADgs%C3%BEula

@borzoi @MyLittleFashy @AnimeTradCath "Jarl is white-blonde in hair and complexion, Karl is ruddy, and Thrall is black. The Indo-European priestly white, military red, and third-estate blue/green[further subdivided in India into yellow for the vaisya and black for the sudra] have slipped along with the substitute, so that white now marks the warriors, red the peasants, and black the slaves. Jarl`s youngest son Konr Ungr `young noble` ended up as a magician-king, thus symbolising the fusion of the remnants of the priestly function into the warrior aristocracy[cf. Old Norse konungr `king`konungaz"
