I've never grilled before but I'm watching KOTH. Is propane better than charcoal for grilling?

@josh Hell no, that's the joke. Propane is clean, efficient, and bland.

@josh There's even an episode where Bobby/Peggy become secretly addicted to charcoal after unknowningly eating charcoal-grilled burgers.

@josh Its easier to just get in there and get it done. Charcoal takes prep work to get the coals up to temperature. Charcoal burns dirty so you get a lot of smoking from it, some foods are great for this like brisket, but some people hate it. Generally you'd use charcoal if you're hosting parties since the coals last a while, if you're cooking for one or a few and just want to get in and out do propane.

@josh It's cleaner and easier to light, but it's more expensive. With a propane grill, you can control the flame better and more evenly, which gives you better control over the heat. Charcoal burns unevenly, however it also burns hotter than what you can get with gas, which matter if you're trying to get a crispy sear. There's some smoke and flavor differences between the two. Charcoal produces more smoke and more of a char flavor; propane imparts a different flavor. That can come down to preference, but usually grillers loves one or the other and refuse to switch.

@PunishedD @josh you hit the nail on the head! Most serious foodie people prefer charcoal and wood. Different fruit trees will enhance the flavor. Cherry, apple or even hickory will do wonders

@Secftblgirl @josh I use charcoal in my outdoor pizza oven instead of wood. Charcoal gives you more consistent temperature once you get a steady flame going.

@josh it's all about personal preference. I like to use different charcoals and woods to see how it changes the flavor, but for convenience and cleanliness propane is good

@Secftblgirl @josh If you're going to grill often, like for daily weekday dinners, propane is a lot quicker and more practical. Charcoal is for spending more time and skill to get the meat right.I'd actually make an argument for having both kinds of grills, if you can. It's nice not to feel constrained from doing a quick grill for dinner on random days. Switch to charcoal when you have the time. And for long term/off grid purposes, you can make your own charcoal to use.

@joshSo, normally I say no. But if you're new to grilling and need something as close to a bland electric oven as possible then yes. Charcoal can have uneven heating and takes more practice to get right than propane. Wood pellet (even the cheap off brands) is a step up but even more oven like. You do get the benefit of good flavor though. Charcoal is still top tier but I won't pretend it's just as easy to jump into as a good propane or pellet grill.

@josh well, with charcoal you taste the smoke, that's why at Strickland we say "Taste the Meat, Not the Heat!".That is to say it's a matter of taste, some people don't like a smoky flavor or don't have good wood to grill with.

@josh Propane is convenient. That's it's only advantage. The fat dripping off the meat and hitting the charcoal adds a distinct flavor.

@josh Absolutely not. Propane doesn't tap into the primal psyche of man. The metaphysical and spiritual importance of harnessing burning wood to provide you with heat and sustenance. The smell and flavor of charcoal is deeply ingrained into the mind of man and is inextricably linked to comfort, safety, satiety, peace. Also, the act of grilling is a ritual link to our past as a species. The "convenience" of propane is an almost blasphemous slap in the face of what should be a challenging and dirty task, yet when mastered is extremely rewarding. If you want convenience use a stove. It'll taste the same as propane anyway.

@josh It depends on what kind of taste you like. Charcoal gets into the meat and gives it a smokier flavor, where propane is cleaner obviously. Cooking with apple wood is a great option by the way. It goes great with a pork loin.

@josh imo no, the charcoal gives it a smokey taste and if you grill with propane why not grill it on a stove top if you dont want the taste the heat

@DonGamerGuy @josh God I love mesquite. I used to buy a giant pork loin almost every weekend and rub it and smoke it with mesquite then feed all the neighbors. Took me a while to figure out they all thought I was weird and just wanted free food.

@josh No, woodfire is best with charcoal being second. Propane is purely an american thing and is basically the retard cattle way to grill.

@josh I love KOTH but Hank's unwavering love for propane is one of the few negatives of his character, but it's part of the comedy of it, considering Hank is a Texan and it's absolutely not a Texan thing to be so gung-ho about propane grilling. Propane vs. charcoal/wood comes down to preference in the end. If you personally want to save a little money down the line by investing in propane, then that's all you baby.I personally don't grill too often, considering if I grill, I want to grill enough food to make having my charcoal set up worth it. Bonus points if my neighbors around me notice my set up and ask if they could have some of their own foods put down on the grill, the more the merrier I think. But I use charcoal purely for taste, propane doesn't impart the same flavor that you expect from grilled food. I also take into consideration that with a charcoal grill, you can place out your briquettes in different arrangements depending on your meat and what you exactly want to do with it. Your charcoal grill can even become a smoker depending on your briquette arrangement. For me, it's all about versatility, and propane can't do that for me.
