@neko It's weird to me that Google doesn't seem to have any plans (at least that I could find) to actually start gradually adding Go into android as an alternative to Java. Since everyone hates Java so much and they also developed Go, you would think they would want to.Apple essentially did something similar to that with IOS when they created Swift as an alternative to Objective-C (whether it is actually any better or not idk since I never used it or OC but that is beside the point).

@Fiddle @neko Strange. I never ever head that existed, but I also haven't looked into android development since Android 4.0 (2012) was new. Looks like the Dart language is similar to Javascript?

@inference i dont think its that bad either. the syntax and looks can be odd but then again I work in C++. It is fairly fast too, but only really portable in a specific sense of course

@neko @icscarythings Java is the most portable language you can get, and it's memory-safe.

@inference @icscarythings Java, like Go, uses GC for memory safety, although Go can do weird low level things too. It's not portable at all, sure, build once and get the program to run on any device that supports JVM, but leave any compiled language to portability

@Moon @inference @icscarythings I think we're just mixing up portability terms. Java is portable as in you can build on one system and expect it to run on anything that runs Java. Whereas anything compiled depends on architecture and runtime as well (but, that technically makes IT the most portable, as in it can run on nearly any computer)

@neko @inference @icscarythings i've gone throuogh the miserable process of trying to get java running on nonstandard platforms also. there's a port of the vm that is as general as possible so you can bootstrap the platform but it's slow as balls, it's called zerovm core because it has no optimizations

@Moon @inference @icscarythings Yeah. Personally though, I don't really see the appeal of Java's portability, because some common libraries like gui toolkits, hardware stuff and such are still dependent on system libraries anyway.

@straw @inference @neko @icscarythings you don't have to recompile your code for other jre implementations. people laugh and say "compile once debug everywhere" but i have been doing it for 25 years and i can count on one hand how many times i've had a problem

@neko @icscarythings Every second Android app already includes native libraries for ARM/ARM64/X86_64, so portability isn't too relevant anymore.

@mint @muio jej, 2 messages telling him there was a bug was all he needed to sperg out and quit????? Gleason gets at least thousands of messages telling him Soapbox fucking sucks. Also lmao at how he demands people use the issue tracker/email thing to fix issues. Fedi is a social system, so is email, how someone communicates about an issue shouldn't matter, all that matters is that the issue gets noted, and presumably fixed. This isnt your alls fault, this is 100% his.Email addresses can be sensitive for some people so I think the system of "hurr durr use email" is lame. It's why I use Fossil and I like that you don't even need an account to make a ticket. Most users don't like sitting and writing and debugging information for developers: It's the near equivalent of having someone do your work for you. Just explain the bug, how to reproduce, and if its reproducable, then note it yourself
